Thaïlande: Une coopérative d’échange « déchets recyclables contre nourriture » aide les plus démunis | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

ICMM - The role of mining in national economies

ICMM - The role of mining in national economies | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

In 2010, the value of global minerals production was four times higher than in 2002. At the same time, there are 40 countries with significant dependence on mineral exports. Thirty of those are low or middle income countries and many have low Human Development Index scores.

This data demonstrates that mining has a significant and growing role to play in economic development in general and poverty reduction in particular. Evidence from ICMM case studies in Chile, Ghana and Brazil illustrates that mining areas have enjoyed stronger poverty reduction and social development performance than non-mining areas.

Rio +20 : Brundtland censures equality outcomes

Rio +20 : Brundtland censures equality outcomes | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it
Gro Harlem Brundtland, the former Norwegian prime minister and chairwoman of the Brundtland commission, has criticised the call to action issued by UN Women on Thursday for not including women's reproductive rights in the text.

Brundtland, a member of the Elders, said omitting a specific reference to reproductive rights represented "a step backwards from previous agreements" on women's empowerment and gender equality. She also criticised vague wording on gender in the Rio+20 draft outcome document.

Paola Rattu's insight:

Biofuels were once seen as a sustainable alternative to some fossil fuels, but evidence shows demand in EU countries for biofuels to run vehicles has led to increased greenhouse gas emissions, rising food prices and more hunger. Buy me a river

Buy me a river | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

The UN has created the "Inclusive Wealth Index", a comprehensive look at a country's wealth that takes things like forests and rivers into account.

Comprised of human, natural and produced capital, the index covers 20 countries between 1990 and 2008. Between them they account for 58% of the world's population and 73% of its GDP.

As GDP does not consider natural-resource depletion or environmental degradation, the UN's index records lower annual average growth in wealth compared with GDP, of 1.7 percentage points.
