Tens of thousands of peasant farmers from across India will set out on Wednesday on a 200-mile march on Delhi in one of the biggest such protests seen in the country for years.

 

Organisers of the demonstration aim to highlight problems for India's landless, for hundreds of millions of poor farmers and for so-called tribal communities who often live in resource-rich areas where lucrative mining operations are causing massive environmental damage.

Biofuels were once seen as a sustainable alternative to some fossil fuels, but evidence shows demand in EU countries for biofuels to run vehicles has led to increased greenhouse gas emissions, rising food prices and more hunger. In the Kisarawe region of Tanzania, more than 19,000 acres of land are being used for a biofuel plantation. ActionAid has been working with affected communities to help them assert their land rights

GRAIN propose aujourd’hui un nouvel ensemble de données concernant 416 exemples récents d’accaparement à grande échelle, qui sont le fait d’investisseurs étrangers. Les terres dont s’emparent les investisseurs sont destinées à la production de cultures alimentaires et couvrent une superficie de près de 35 millions d’hectares dans 66 pays.

BIGGEST STUDY OF LARGE LAND DEALS TO DATE WARNS OF THREATS TO POOR | International Land Coalition | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

The most comprehensive study of large land acquisitions in developing countries to date — published online by the International Land Coalition (ILC) — has found more evidence of harm than benefits.

More than 40 organisations collaborated on the Global Commercial Pressures on Land Research Project, which synthesised 27 case studies, thematic studies and regional overviews.

Developing rigorous methods to assess how the rush for land is exacerbating land scarcity and affecting people locally is perhaps the most promising way to measure what the scale of the land rush means for recipient countries and the people who live in them, says Lorenzo Cotula.

New international land deals database reveals rush to buy up Africa | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Almost 5% of Africa's agricultural land has been bought or leased by investors since 2000, according to an international coalition of researchers and NGOs that has released the world's largest public database of international land deals.

 

The database, launched on Thursday, lifts the lid on a decade of secretive deals struck by governments, investors and speculators seeking large tracts of fertile land in developing countries around the world.
