Why should Europe help developing countries?

Why should Europe help developing countries? | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

India's 'peanuts' snub may change future of aid policy

India's 'peanuts' snub may change future of aid policy | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Dr Nilma Gulrajani, a professor at the London School of Economics and an expert in foreign Aid, reasons that British developmental aid does serve a purpose and is, in fact, needed.

(...)

In any case the nature of the relationship between the donor and the done is evolving over time. “The UK has been downsizing its programme in India,” notes Guljarani “What might happen is that the UK will provide more of a technical assistance on ‘how to do things’ and provide expertise and knowledge, and downgrade direct financial aid.”

‘I’m against everything that is violent, and I used to say that our revolution is peaceful and it must remain peaceful, but after going through all this pain and after seeing and watching all these tortured people, kids, women, I say yes to international intervention and even yes to war, because we have had enough’

Cinco preguntas sobre la crisis. Entrevista a los economistas Fumagalli y Marazzi… | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Pascal Lamy, “Africa should strenghten trade within itself” « Afronline – The Voice Of Africa

Pascal Lamy, “Africa should strenghten trade within itself” « Afronline – The Voice Of Africa | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

What do you want to see African countries, particularly LDCs, do in order to offset this bleak projection?

"For a continent like Africa, it is not all bleak. It is bleak for the EU and probably the US, which is only part of the trade relationship for Africa.

It is bright for Asia, which is a growing part of [trade] relationships for Africa. There is bad news in traditional markets and good news for new markets.

My advice for Africa, as I said at the AU Summit [last week], is to strengthen trade within itself. Given the global uncertainty, which I think is here to stay, the most important thing will be growing intra-African trade. This will make the economy of the continent more resilient and less prone to external shocks, like what happened on the EU, the US, China fronts."
