The Environmental Justice Foundation's (EJF) Pirate Fishing Campaign works to eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated 'pirate' fishing operations. EJF hopes this may be achieved by ending the use of flags of convenience for fisheries vessels, closing ports of convenience, empowering grassroots organisations with video and advocacy training, and securing support for the governments of developing countries, particularly in West Africa, so that they can address pirate fishing in their own waters.

Fishermen from Dandi who cross into Pakistan waters are imprisoned, and their families given just 50 rupees a day by the state.

 

Activists want foreign ministers of both countries, who are expected to meet in July, to finally end the hostile policy and commit to protecting the fishing community. Mr. Zahid describes it as a “story of small people” whose troubles can either be swept under the carpet or easily fixed. “I have seen officers talk about fishermen like numbers, not people who are fathers, husbands and sons,” he said.
