Are there too many players in the online travel industry value chain? | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

The lack of standards, a push towards virtual cards to simplify the payment process and the role of technology in reducing complexity are among the challenges facing the global travel industry.

Many would argue that the systems and methods online travel businesses use to sell travel services have become too convoluted. Technology companies can play a role within this space to reduce the levels of complexity that have complicated purchasing within the sector.

Forget flights, Google is quietly adding new features to Hotel Finder as rivals look on (and advertise) | Tnooz | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Having launched its own search tool almost two years ago for the US market and US hotels, Google has gradually rolled out to more international properties.

But there is a lot more going on.

Google Hotel Finder has tried all manner of tests in the SERPs like this, but nothing more than the regular 1% of total traffic test. Indeed, the date box and star class links are found on many hotel searches in the UK and seem to have passed the 1% testing status.

Priceline to run Kayak as separate brand and will tap mobile expertise

Priceline to run Kayak as separate brand and will tap mobile expertise | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Priceline sees its pending acquisition of Kayak as a great financial proposition in its own right, as well as a way to bring on board a stellar technical/mobile team to share expertise with Priceline's team, and the converse, as well.

The deal marks the first time that Priceline has entered the metasearch, travel planning and advertising business, all of which it has historically seen as a distraction to its core business of getting consumers to consummate bookings and transactions.

Kayak will be operated as a separate brand, much in the way that the group’s Priceline.com, Booking.com, Agoda, and CarRentals.com are operated, with each unit’s management having considerable independence.

Treovi launches its ’100% commission-free’ hotel booking service into public beta | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Treovi claims to be the world’s first 100% commission-free Web-based hotel reservation platform.

The Swiss startup launched in closed beta at the beginning of the summer, and officially opened a couple of weeks back for hotel registrations, though it had started signing up hotels from early July.

Treovi is free for hotels to register and upload their inventory, while it’s also free for guests to search, find and book hotels. The company verifies and approves the entries made by the hoteliers, who are given access to an administration panel where they can complete the relevant hotel information, including hotel description, photos, and setting up room availability and rate types.

OTAs do attract travellers with promotions, but focus isn’t on minting money

OTAs do attract travellers with promotions, but focus isn’t on minting money | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

Online travel agencies align their promotions and deals with consumer demands and interest. These intermediaries not only try to work in the interest of hotels, but they also ensure that such offerings remain true to an OTA’s brand values.

hat’s why they look at every detail minutely, be it for the timing of the deal, objective or even the way promotions are perceived by their consumers. EyeforTravel’s Ritesh Gupta finds out more.

Ratenparität in Distributionskanälen: PARI-PARI oder LARIFARI? (Markus Luthe, IHA) | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

Online Travel Agencies 2Q and 1H12: International Markets Thrown a Curveball | PhoCusWright Conference | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
The second quarter of 2012 was challenging for U.S. public online travel agencies (OTAs) - Expedia, Orbitz and Priceline. Domestic business proved resilient for most, but growth from overseas operations was muted across the board. French hoteliers voice concern about OTA business practices | Tnooz

French hoteliers voice concern about OTA business practices | Tnooz | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
oteliers are often frustrated by the significant fees charged for bookings via OTAs. The trend among many hotels is to do whatever it takes to encourage more direct bookings that circumvent the OTA system – RoomKey being one of the most recent well-organized examples.

Other than pull inventory or redouble inbound marketing efforts, what can hoteliers do to push back against the OTAs?

One hospitality industry veteran has taken to the Web to publicly gripe about the OTA situation on French travel industry website Hospitality-On.

In a series of articles, Georges Panayotis wrote about the “tense partnership” between hotels and OTAs, and received such a supportive response from hoteliers that he decided to create an online petition for hoteliers to express their frustration with the current model.
