The Shortest Path to Happiness: Recommending Beautiful, Quiet, and Happy Routes in the City

When providing directions to a place, web and mobile mapping services are all able to suggest the shortest route. The goal of this work is to automatically suggest routes that are not only short but also emotionally pleasant. To quantify the extent to which urban locations are pleasant, we use data from a crowd-sourcing platform that shows two street scenes in London (out of hundreds), and a user votes on which one looks more beautiful, quiet, and happy. We consider votes from more than 3.3K individuals and translate them into quantitative measures of location perceptions. We arrange those locations into a graph upon which we learn pleasant routes. Based on a quantitative validation, we find that, compared to the shortest routes, the recommended ones add just a few extra walking minutes and are indeed perceived to be more beautiful, quiet, and happy. To test the generality of our approach, we consider Flickr metadata of more than 3.7M pictures in London and 1.3M in Boston, compute proxies for the crowdsourced beauty dimension (the one for which we have collected the most votes), and evaluate those proxies with 30 participants in London and 54 in Boston. These participants have not only rated our recommendations but have also carefully motivated their choices, providing insights for future work.

Marketing the travel industry: Time for disruption?

The Internet is largely responsible for the commoditisation of travel and the over-reliance on price as a defining factor within the purchase decision. However we're currently seeing a shift towards other more qualitative aspects of travel, concentrating on travellers’ overall convenience rather than just price.

The Only App Travelers Truly Need on Their Smartphones

The Only App Travelers Truly Need on Their Smartphones | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Finding directions is the number one reason most travelers reach for their smartphone in a new destination.

More than half of U.S. adults report using their phones to navigate a new destination via GPS – an activity more common than searching for restaurants (44 percent), looking up reviews (31 percent), and tracking flight changes (29 percent) — according to interviews with 2,550 U.S. travelers.

The study, which highlights the top ten most common travel activities done with a smartphone, was conducted as part of MMGY Global’s comprehensive 2014 Portrait of American Travelers.

Wake up, Western hotels: Chinese travellers prefer Weibo and WeChat to Twitter and WhatsApp

Wake up, Western hotels: Chinese travellers prefer Weibo and WeChat to Twitter and WhatsApp | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

With the Chinese expected to soon become the largest outbound tourist market on the planet, you would expect grateful recipients in the West to be gearing up for the influx?

Sadly not.

Whilst a number of travel brands and destination marketers are making an extra effort to better serve this growing number of Chinese travellers, a recent study shows that many London hoteliers remain mute to how this demographic (affluent, eager to explore) engage in social media.

Big picture, Big Data and big ideas: TripAdvisor on where mobile travel is heading

Big picture, Big Data and big ideas: TripAdvisor on where mobile travel is heading | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

Joost Schreve, vice president of mobile at TripAdvisor, probably has one of the best jobs in the travel industry.

The former-CEO of Everytrail (the company was bought by TripAdvisor in February 2011) doesn’t really have to get involved in sales or the direct commercial activities of TripAdvisor’s products – instead, he oversees the company’s development of mobile products and gets to think about where it all fits in.

It’s a somewhat flippant description, of course – clearly Schreve has targets to meet and commercial activities to consider, but having the responsibility of working out what one of the biggest travel brands on the planet does to meet the demands of the mobile consumer is arguably at the “That’s A Cool Job” end of the employment spectrum.

The economic need for change behind the (hoped for) NDC revolution

In part one of this two-part series on the progress of IATA’s New Distribution Capability we looked at technology, process and enablement. In part two let’s address the economics. Distribution to intermediaries needs to change. Recent numbers on the value of merchandising and the cost of distribution show how reducing cost and raising revenue are critical to the health of the airline industry. While obvious it seems that only recently airlines have started bringing ROCI (Return on Capital Invested) into their Lexicon. Let’s look at the macro numbers.

The Consolidation in the Online Travel Booking Space Over the Last Two Years

The Consolidation in the Online Travel Booking Space Over the Last Two Years | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

The online travel booking market is increasingly looking like the rest of the Web: Size, reach, and revenues are consolidating among few big players, and they are driving the spate of big acquisitions in the market.

The latest acquisition of Wotif by Expedia for $658 million is a continuum to the process that started couple of years ago.

The latest round of big stakes mergers and acquisitions arguably started in fall of 2012, when Priceline plunked down $1.8 billion for Kayak. Since then, the online booking market has become a two-horse race: Priceline Group vs. Expedia, as the rest of the old stalwarts like Travelocity and Orbitz, among others, have fallen way behind.
