His “re-envisioned” approach towards history is thoroughly explained throughout the book. In a nutshell, however, Lesh explains that he wants to incorporate a history lab, or a historical investigation process. With this idea, Lesh feels that students will be able to become more involved with history and later generate their own interpretations.

Heath Wallace's insight:

Loewen, J.W.(2007). Lies My Teacher Told Me. New York: The New Press.

In “Lies My Teacher Told Me”, Loewen explained the use and lies that textbooks contain. Loewen explains that, because many teachers are scared, or perhaps to lazy to deviate from the textbook, do not create their own history content. Because of this, Loewen explains, students are often being taught material that isn’t completely true. Loewen also mentions the size of these text books, stating that they are intimidating to the reader, and that this, as well as other reasons, are why students deem history as being “boring”.  Loewen also explains that these textbooks do not link history of the past, to that of the present. In other words, the more repetition the better. All in all, Lemov describes and walks the reader through 49 techniques to better themselves and the students.

Heath Wallace's insight:

Loewen, J.W.(2009). Teaching what really happened: How to avoid the tyranny of textbooks and get students excited about doing history. New York: Teachers College Press.

“Teaching What Really Happened” by James Loewen illustrates the lack of awareness that teachers have towards a multicultural classroom. Loewen provides examples to help get students of all races involved. For example, Loewen often illustrates many controversial topics such as the history of Native Americans. Loewen shows how to incorporate all learners and teach them what really happened. Loewen also makes students question their sources instead of believing everything they read or hear. Loewen’s promotes and embraces multicultural classrooms and gives many examples why other teachers should has well.
