Ethics in the NFL » First Thoughts | A First Things Blog

Junior Seau, arguably one of the NFL’s greatest linebackers ever to play the game, shot himself in the chest yesterday. This follows on a series of recent suicides of NFL players Dave Duerson, Terry Long, and Andre Waters. To this, Charles Camosy at Catholic Moral Theology asks: “When will we seriously debate the ethics of supporting American football?”

This article talks about the sportsman model of sports saying that all players should follow the 4 basic rules of ethics, Fairness, Integrity, Responsibility, and Respect. It says "The sportsmanship model is built on the idea that sport both demonstrates and encourages character development, which then influences the moral character of the broader community." This is true because every sport has rules pushed and sometimes not noticed. It gave some good insight to how a player should play a sport.

Most interesting article on ethics in sports. The difference between gamenship and sportsmanship was addressed. Gamenship is winning at all cost no matter what. Sportsmanship is healthy competition. It seems as though the sporting activities today have evolved more into gamenship rather than good clean fun which is sportmanship.

The first thing to note about the Halifax / Africville case is that it's not primarily a black-vs-white dispute. It's clear that those who oppose the hire don't speak for Halifax's entire black community.
