Thousands of domestic violence victims withdraw support for charges against abusers after Government cuts

Thousands of domestic violence victims withdraw support for charges against abusers after Government cuts | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
More than 160,000 victims of domestic violence in England withdrew their support for charges against their abusers in 2016, a number that rocketed by almost 40 per cent compared with the previous 12 months, exclusive figures reveal. The jump has fuelled concern that cuts to policing and specialist services for victims of domestic abuse are pushing vulnerable people back into dangerous and potentially deadly situations, while allowing perpetrators to escape justice.

3 key steps to end corruption

3 key steps to end corruption | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
As an increasingly integrated global community, we now stand at a crossroads. The United Nations Millennium Development Goals are reaching their conclusion in 2015, and discussions are advancing on the targets that will shape the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda. The outcome of these discussions will be the identification of the core areas that require global attention to ensure the achievement of sustainable development. I am firmly convinced that for sustainable development to take hold, renewed attention and focus must be given to curbing all forms and manifestations of corruption worldwide.

How President Trump and congressional Republicans are undercutting wages and protections for working people | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
We are nearly 100 days into President Donald Trump’s administration, a benchmark that gives us a chance to take stock of what the president and new Congress have accomplished and what their priorities are. We have seen a flurry of activity—from legislation and executive orders, as well as actions taken (or not taken) by the administration—that, sometimes subtly, shift power away from working people and towards corporations and the 1 percent. Some of these actions have been high profile, but others have gone almost unnoticed. Taken together, they undercut wages and protections for working people.

How Wall Street Once Killed the U.S. Solar Industry

How Wall Street Once Killed the U.S. Solar Industry | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
Why is the American solar-power industry so small?

It’s less obvious than it may seem. The global industry is a $65-billion business, and the United States has been involved in it from the beginning. NASA first improved and perfected panels for early satellite and Apollo missions. American firms have been manufacturing and selling solar panels for 40 years.

Yet North American firms produce only about 3 percent of the world’s solar panels. China and Taiwan, meanwhile, make more than 60 percent of them.

Libor: Bank of England implicated in secret recording - BBC News | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
A secret recording that implicates the Bank of England in Libor rigging has been uncovered by BBC Panorama.
The 2008 recording adds to evidence the central bank repeatedly pressured commercial banks during the financial crisis to push their Libor rates down.
Libor is the rate that banks lend to each other and it sets a benchmark for mortgages and loans for ordinary customers.
The Bank of England said Libor was not regulated in the UK at the time.
Banks setting artificially low Libor rates is called lowballing.

Instead he asked his massive readership to look at the structure rather than the individual, to think about the warped systems that enabled political corruption, and to consider the ways angry voters inadvertently encouraged behavior they condemned."

90 years later, the broadcast public interest standard remains ill-defined | Brookings Institution

90 years later, the broadcast public interest standard remains ill-defined | Brookings Institution | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it

"The public interest standard has governed broadcast radio and television since Congress passed the Radio Act of 1927. However, decades of successive court cases and updated telecommunications laws have done little to clarify what falls into the public interest. The Radio Act gave local broadcasters monopolies over specific channels of electromagnetic spectrum to reduce interference on public airwaves. In exchange for control over a limited resource, the text of the law instructs broadcasters to operate in the “public interest, convenience, and necessity”. A recently released paper by Center for Technology Innovation Nonresident Senior Fellow Stuart N. Brotman outlines the legislative, judicial, and regulatory history of this public interest standard and offers some recommendations for how it might be reformed."
