People Shouldn't Buy the Right to Steal Your Land | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it

"They have seen this monster before.

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA—The involvement of the indigenous populations in both the United States and Canada in the opposition to various pipelines, including the Keystone XL, should come as no surprise. As we have said, the abuse and misuse of the eminent domain process in the construction of the pipeline here has been an effective organizing tool to bring together environmentalists and ranchers to oppose the project. And if it is nothing else, the history of the native peoples on this continent is the greatest example of eminent domain abuse in human history. They know better than anyone the feeling that greater forces from the outside can overwhelm and threaten long-standing ways of life."

Dishonorable Behavior

Dishonorable Behavior | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
“Crisis,” “cancer,” “silent epidemic,” “stain [on] our force’s honor”—these are among the ways senior Department of Defense officials over the past several years have described the incidence of sexual assault against women and men in the armed forces of the United States. Almost everyone thinks sexual assault in the military is a problem—and thinks about it as a problem linked to the presence of women in uniform, even though men are also victimized. Some Americans, however, including the current commander in chief, apparently believe it to be an inevitability. In the spring of 2013, when DOD leaders testified before Congress as it searched for solutions, Donald Trump tweeted: “26,000 unreported sexual assults [sic] in the military-only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?”

On Monday, an appeals court ruled that Watson, now 32, is not eligible for any of that money — because while his case is "disturbing," the statute of limitations actually expired while he was still in ICE custody without a lawyer.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals acknowledged that the ruling is "harsh" but said it was bound by precedent.

Would you like to pay less tax? Make a sandwich: specifically, a "double Irish, Dutch sandwich".
Suppose you're American. You set up a company in Bermuda and sell it your intellectual property. It then sets up a subsidiary in Ireland.
Now, set up another company in Ireland: it bills your European operations for amounts resembling their profits. Now, start a company in the Netherlands.
Have your second Irish company send money to your Dutch company, which immediately sends it back to your first Irish company. You know, the one headquartered in Bermuda.
Are you bored and confused yet? If so, that's part of the point.
Tax havens depend on making it, at best, very difficult to get your head around financial flows, and, at worst, impossible to find out any facts.
Accounting techniques that make your brain hurt enable multinationals such as Google, eBay and Ikea to minimise their tax bills - completely legally.

The EU’s Mafia State

The EU’s Mafia State | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
Following the collapse of communism, many of us in Central and Eastern Europe had hoped that the region would steadily move toward liberal democracy, and that any obstacles en route to that goal could be overcome. But in many former communist countries, older systems of patronage and corruption have survived, and taken new forms. What we thought was a transitional phase has become a permanent state of affairs.

Consider Hungary, which has become a mafia state during the seven years of Viktor Orbán’s rule as prime minister. Hungary is unique in that it moved toward liberal democracy and joined the European Union before changing course and heading toward autocracy. The rest of the region’s mafia states, such as Russia, Azerbaijan, and other Central Asian former Soviet republics, either passed through a period of oligarchic flux, or took a direct path from communist dictatorship to criminal enterprise.

How Amazon's Accounting Makes Rich People's Income Invisible - Evonomics

How Amazon's Accounting Makes Rich People's Income Invisible - Evonomics | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
Image you’re Jeff Bezos, circa 1998. You’re building a company (Amazon) that stands to make you and your compatriots vastly rich.

But looking forward, you see a problem: if your company makes profits, it will have to pay taxes on them. (At least nominally, in theory, 35%!) Then you and your investors will have to pay taxes on them again when they’re distributed to you as dividends. (Though yes, at a far lower 20% rate than what high earners pay on earned income.) Add those two up over many years, and you’re talking tens, hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes.

You’re a very smart guy. How are you going to avoid that?

The first law that will be introduced under Emmanuel Macron, the new President of the French Republic, will be about ethics in public life. The bill is currently being drafted, so that it can be adopted in the next few weeks by the future parliament. It shows just how much this issue struck a chord with public opinion during a particularly bitter presidential campaign. It continues to be the focus of attention in the run-up to the legislative elections on 11 and 18 June.

Heinz in court over 'healthy' toddlers' snack Shredz - BBC News

Heinz in court over 'healthy' toddlers' snack Shredz - BBC News | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
Heinz has been taken to court in Australia after a watchdog said it falsely marketed a children's food as healthy.
The lawsuit concerns Shredz, a snack made from fruit juice concentrate and pastes.
Heinz, which denies the allegations, says the bars have "a similar nutrition profile to sultanas".
But the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says they should be treated like confectionary.
It claims the snack, aimed at toddlers, contains more than 60% sugar.
The product is no longer on the market, but came in three flavours - "peach apple and veg", "berries apple and veg", and "strawberry and apple with chia seeds".
The packaging stated it was "99% fruit and veg" and featured a selection of fruits prominently on the front.

"The U.S. Supreme Court recently announced that it will hear a Wisconsin case on political gerrymandering, the practice of drawing legislative boundaries that favors one political party (the one in charge of drawing the lines) in elections. The case will focus not on questions of racial bias, which was at issue in a May Supreme Court ruling on two North Carolina congressional districts, but on partisanship and unequal representation. The most recent Supreme Court ruling in a political redistricting case occurred in 2004, in Vieth v. Jubelirer."

Germany fears huge losses in massive tax scandal - BBC News

Germany fears huge losses in massive tax scandal - BBC News | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
It is reckoned to be the biggest tax scandal in German post-war history.
An international group of bankers, lawyers and stockbrokers - reportedly with links to the City of London - appears to have fiddled the tax system, employing practices which were at best unethical, at worst illegal.
Ultimately they may have deprived the state of nearly €32bn (£28bn; $36bn). As the German broadcaster ARD wryly noted, that would have paid for repairs to a lot of schools and bridges.
The newspaper Die Zeit adds that the sum would more than cover the cost of the refugee influx for a year.
Prosecutors have been investigating for some time. And gradually it is emerging that large-scale tax avoidance was taking place right under the noses of the authorities.

Indonesia sues Thailand's PTT, PTTEP for $2 billion over oil spill

Indonesia sues Thailand's PTT, PTTEP for $2 billion over oil spill | Politcs? Ethics? Rules? Cheating? | Scoop.it
The Indonesian government is suing Thailand's state-owned PTT and PTT Exploration and Production for around $2 billion for alleged damage to the environment from an oil spill in the Timor Sea eight years ago.

The Montara wellhead operated by subsidiary PTTEP Australasia caught fire in 2009, leaking hundreds of thousands of litres of oil off the northern coast of Western Australia, according to media reports at the time.

The incident was considered one of Australia's worst oil disasters, and PTTEP was fined A$510,000 ($394,000) by a Darwin court after pleading guilty in 2011 to charges related to workplace health and safety and failure to maintain good oilfield practice.
