Can slaughterhouses be humane?

Can slaughterhouses be humane? | Ethics of eating | Scoop.it
Prather Ranch Meat Company, which kills its cattle painlessly, bills itself as an ethical beef producer
Andrew Chignell's insight:

These stories seem to be all the rage in the press at the moment... this one following closely on the heels of the enormous expose in Harpers.

The photography is better than the writing in this one, I thought.  And as in the Harpers piece, the author ends up eating the beef in the final paragraph.  That appears to be the analogue to the Hollywood happy ending in a lot these tales-from-the-slaughterhouse articles.

Milk Grown in a Lab Is Humane and Sustainable. But Can It Catch On?

Milk Grown in a Lab Is Humane and Sustainable. But Can It Catch On? | Ethics of eating | Scoop.it
A Silicon Valley vision: Instead of milking dairy cows, we could make milk in a lab with genetically engineered yeast.
Andrew Chignell's insight:

Unlike the "let them live our their natural lives" model also posted this week, this appears to be a scalable and sustainable model (because there are no cows involved at all!).  Thanks to Antonia Ruppel for the link.

The Bioethicist Turned Butcher

Dan Honig got his master’s degree in bioethics after studying philosophy and environmental ethics. Now, he co-owns Happy Valley Meat Company, a high-quality beef supplier.
Andrew Chignell's insight:

The final quotation seems to be in tension with his overall position (and practice):  “Animals have needs and desires. They are not just machines, but morally similar to us,” he said. “We shouldn’t ignore everything that makes them a living creature.”

The world's largest hog and pork buyer wants its contract farmers to move pregnant sows out of constrictive crates and into group houses, generally considered more humane, by 2022. The move is significant because independent farmers supply about 40 percent of the company's sows.

It’s Here: Vegan Cheese That Actually Tastes Good | Ethics of eating | Scoop.it
Both vegans and non-vegans alike are pretty much in agreement that most vegan cheeses on the market are a poor substitute for the real thing. But two Bay Area companies, Kite Hill and Miyoko's Kitchen, are crafting artisanal plant-based cheeses that might indeed surprise even the most discerning cheese-lover.

Cow Nation - British Milk for Animal Lovers

Cow Nation - British Milk for Animal Lovers | Ethics of eating | Scoop.it
The most animal-friendly brand... ever. Cow Nation has a dairy model which enables each cow to live out its full natural life along with all their offspring.
Andrew Chignell's insight:

This may be the least cruel milk the world has ever seen.

Unfortunately, it's very hard to see how this could be scaled up to meet demand.  Moreover, as Harold Brown pointed out to me, given the toll that cows take on the environment (animal industry produces more greenhouse gas than the entire transportation sector according to the recent UN report "Livestock's Long Shadow"), it's unfortunately hard to see how letting them live out their natural lives is a viable option.

What you don’t know about farming — from tax subsidies to farmer’s markets — revealed.
Andrew Chignell's insight:

Hilarious. "More than 8,000 farmers’ markets have cropped up nationwide as part of the local-food craze. But what they’re selling you might not be as local as you think. Some less-than-scrupulous vendors have been caught buying from grocers in bulk and attempting to pass off supermarket produce as their own."
