A pilot project this summer will aim to put more locally-grown fruits and vegetables on the plates of thousands of Minnesotans.

Mark Bittman mentioned this program yesterday in our class discussion.  Even better than Minnesota's coupon program would be a federal subsidy that would double or triple the value of food stamps that are spent on fresh fruits and vegetables (local or not).  The reason this is so brilliant is that one of the main worries about promoting organic/whole foods diets is that they are too expensive for people in poverty to afford them (this is the so-called "elitist" objection).  And yet those are the same people who are most likely to turn to cheap junk or fast foods to get the calories they need.
