Extinction Burst! (Psyc 420)

When historically reinforced behavior no longer is followed by the expected consequences (extinction), our first reaction is to try the behavior repeatedly in order to obtain the desired consequences. This sudden increase in behavior signals us that we are effectively withholding reinforcement for behavior. In other words, when extinction is used, the behavior is confirmation that the intervention is working. Eventually, the person stops trying the behavior. Check out the video to better understand the concept.
