Why we did not evolve to live forever: Unveiling the mystery of why we age

Why we did not evolve to live forever: Unveiling the mystery of why we age | Estudios de futuro | Scoop.it
Researchers at the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) in Mainz, Germany, have made a breakthrough in understanding the origin of the ageing process. They have identified that genes belonging to a process called autophagy -- one of the cells most critical survival processes -- promote health and fitness in young worms but drive the process of ageing later in life. This research published in the journal Genes & Development gives some of the first clear evidence for how the ageing process arises as a quirk of evolution. These findings may also have broader implications for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease where autophagy is implicated. The researchers show that by promoting longevity through shutting down autophagy in old worms there is a strong improvement in neuronal and subsequent whole body health.

Synaptic receptor mobility :discovery of a new mechanism for controlling memory - CNRS Web site - CNRS | Estudios de futuro | Scoop.it
Researchers in Bordeaux recently discovered a new mechanism for storing information in synapses and a means of controlling the storage process. The breakthrough moves science closer to unveiling the mystery of the molecular mechanisms of memory and learning processes. The research, carried out primarily by researchers at the Interdisciplinary Institute for Neurosciences (CNRS/Université de Bordeaux) and the Bordeaux Imaging Center (CNRS/Université de Bordeaux/Inserm), appears in the 13 September 2017 edition of Nature.

The digital transformation of learning: Social, informal, self-service, and enjoyable | #SocialLEARNing

The digital transformation of learning: Social, informal, self-service, and enjoyable | #SocialLEARNing | Estudios de futuro | Scoop.it

To get a sense of the changes in the digital learning space, I reached out to a well-known expert in online education, Megan Torrance, founder of TorranceLearning:

I see organizations making a move to a more ubiquitous, and at the same time democratized, learning environment. The information to do the job exists within or alongside the work itself, not tucked away in a byzantine course catalog many clicks away.

Contributions from peers, internal experts, external sources and leaders complement the formal instruction provided by the learning & development teams, and the organization's body of knowledge is constantly refreshed. Universal search tools surface learning objects from a variety of locations all in one place. Usage and ratings data are stored centrally - not siloed in many separate tools -- and the employee has a comprehensive record of his or her own learning and insights.

The learning function in this new environment provides structure, foundational curricula and the tools by which the organization's conversation can take place. When change, or even crisis, happens, the organization already has the learning and social pathways by which to take fast action, communicate broadly, and gather important information for decision-making.

From this we can clearly see that learning is shift to be integrated much more into the flow of work and situated as a capability within the modern digital workplace.

Social learning is a vital trend in the gig economy era for organizations that wish to maintain their institutional knowledge, be globally competitive, and sustainable. The bottom line is that with various data showing that up to 80% of all learning is informal, social learning now appears to be positioned as a major component of the future of workplace education. In other words, the digital learning organization will be the sustainable digital organization.

From a Social and Solidarity Economy to a Sharing Economy

From a Social and Solidarity Economy to a Sharing Economy | Estudios de futuro | Scoop.it
The New Alternative Economic Systems (Part One)

The Emergence Of The Sharing Economy

Over the past few years, consumers have naturally developed, in the face of successive recessions, more rational purchasing reflexes. They have become more concerned about the relevance of their purchases and the social benefits they may have. More aware of the inequalities and the consequences of the enormous waste caused by the overconsumption of society, connected consumers are increasingly opting for platforms for the exchange of goods and services between individuals, without seeking to make profits and without intermediaries. And, if they choose commercial offer platforms, it is often in a context of collaborative economics and sharing. A new economic system is taking shape. It relies more on the pooling of goods, places or tools. And it is more geared towards use than acquisition. It is the sharing economy.

Already by 1994 – 1995, the giants of eCommerce (Amazon) and Ebay appeared, and the first collaborative platform were born. At the turn of the new millennium, platforms for the exchange of knowledge (Wikipedia), and sales of goods / services between individuals (Kijiji) were born. It is at the turn of the millennium, with the emergence of social media, that the first practices of couchsurfing and co-rent (Airbnb), and pooling of urban transport (Uber, Lyft) took root. Then, video and audio streaming subscription sites (Netflix, Soundcloud), and music (Spotify).
