Areva, Schneider Electric sign energy-storage deal

Areva, Schneider Electric sign energy-storage deal

Shankarsingh Rajput's insight:

By William Horobin

PARIS--French nuclear group Areva SA (AREVA.FR) and electrical equipment maker Schneider Electric SA (SU.FR) said Thursday they have signed a partnership to develop energy storage.

The two French companies said they will combine their expertise to create energy storage solutions that improve the reliability of electricity grids in isolated areas.

No financial details of the pact were published.

Energy storage is seen as the next step towards a low carbon emission energy mix, favored by European governments looking to encourage renewable energy sources. Storage helps manage wind and solar resources that are intermittent, as they depend on weather conditions to produce power.

Areva is already using its so-called Greenenergy Box technology at a Corsican solar plant.

Shankarsingh Rajput's insight:

Global clean energy investment dropped 12% in 2013 due to cheap PV and European policy shift.

Cleantech investment in Japan rose by 55% (35.4 B) mainly due to boom in small scale solar installation as the country struggles to fill gap left by shuttered nuclear plant.

In Europe, investment slumped 41% to $57.8bn last year, from $97.8bn as big economies such as Germany, Italy and France either restricted subsidy payments for new projects or else failed to disperse uncertainty over future support

CPUC Mandate ( 2014- 200MW, 2016-270, 2018-365, 2020-490)

The mandate, issued in early September, calls for the state’s three investor-owned electric utilities–Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric–to procure 1.325 gigawatts of energy storage by 2020.

It would start the procurement process as early as December 2014, using an all source solicitation with a target of 200 megawatts of storage procurement targets for transmission, distribution, and customer-side energy storage systems. The utilities would conduct additional solicitations in 2016, 2018, and 2020, with targets of 270, 365, and 490 megawatts, respectively

IHS: Grid-connected energy storage to exceed 40GW by 2022 | ESS (Energy Storage Systems) | Scoop.it

http://www.pv-tech.org/news/ihs_grid_connected_energy_storage_to_exceed_40gw_by_2022

Shankarsingh Rajput's insight:

Grid connected Energy Storage Systems (GESS) to reach 40 GW by 2022 ( as per an article, 3 to 5 Bn investment required for complying the mandate by CPUC of 1.325 GW energy storage installation), Extrapolating the same, GESS market potential could be anywhere between $100-$150 Bn by 2022.

IHS estimates between 2012 and 2017, USA will lead the race in GESS, accounting 43% of total installation.

Further, during the same period,  Li-Ion technology will dominate, accounting 64% of total GESS installations.

Long term, technologies including NAS, sodium nickel chloride, flow batteries and alternative CAE storage systems will start to take a bigger share of the market, particularly for energy intensive functions

Factors for growth in GESS:

1. Availability of financial incentives to reduce the upfront cost of an energy storage system (ESS)

2. Introduction of energy storage procurement and installation targets and

3. Changes in electricity grid regulations
