10 Most Common Rookie Presentation Mistakes

Hmmm....again, some good things here, but much of this seems directed at business pitch-type presentations.  For example, this lists data-rich presentations as something you should avoid.  You need to FOCUS and EMPHASIZE data rich presentations.

How To Give a Killer Presentation

A 12-year-old boy from Kenya was asked to give a TED talk. Although nervous and inexperienced in English, he told his story before a crowd of hundreds. And when he finished, the response was immediate – a full standing ovation.

"In a matter of hours, a speaker's content and delivery can be transformed from muddled to mesmerizing."

In this article, TED curator Chris Anderson shares how speakers of all levels can learn to give world-class presentations.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

I was a bit reluctant to post this for you here.  TED talks have to some extent jumped the shark in my opinion with NPR-hyped radio programs, independently-hosted TEDx events, people that always are just somehow brilliant and subtly want you to know how cleaver they are telling you about how great technology always is, etc.

Nevertheless, there is much to learn from a well executed TED-type talk.  Just don't swallow the cool aid too intensely and generally watch out for ANY advice from folks who reference "business" presentation or "board meetings:" the kind of talks these types of folks are interested in giving are not technical and are designed as sales pitches rather than information transfer generally.

The Do's and Don'ts of Resume Writing - DAV

The Do's and Don'ts of Resume Writing - DAV | Capstone: An ESRM Coda | Scoop.it
Words, especially when printed on paper, can be like bullets fired from a gun. Once they’re fired, or in this analogy printed, you can’t haul them back in. They’re out there and they’ll either strike the target you intended, miss it completely or simply react to gravity and fall to the ground. The same can be said of resumes. Once you fire a resume off to a potential employer, you must be absolutely sure your words will have a positive … Read More

Plotly

Plotly is a collaborative data analysis and graphing tool.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Plotly (for an overview see https://plot.ly/) is a brand new online application where you can execute all manner of graphs.  You can do this from scratch by typing or pasting data into an online spreadsheet, upload excel or other data files, or simply import data files directly from more sophisticated programs (R, Matlab, etc.).  When done, you can either publish/export your graphs or push them back into a host of more traditional programs (R, Matlab, etc.).  Perhaps the neatest thing is that you can collaborate within groups.  This is sort of like google docs but for actual graphics; multiple students can edit a given graph in real time.  This company is brand new and have only been licensing their product for the past 90 days or so.   They have set-up an account for us on their server and are allowing us to pilot this program in our courses and research for the next 120 days.  Our dedicated CSUCI space is ready for you to try out (go to https://csuci.plot.ly/) and create an account.

What are you going to do with that degree?

Ben Schmidt, an assistant professor of history at Northeastern University, was curious about careers after college degrees, so he used a quick Sankey diagram to look at data from the American Community Survey. College degrees are on the left, and professions are on the right. The thicker a line that connects a degree and a profession, the more people tend to go a certain route.

For example, if you click on "General Education" you see a lot of people become elementary and middle school teachers. The diagram works the other way around too, so that you can select a profession to see what people in that area tend to major in.

As Schmidt says in his description, it was just quick sketch, so the interaction is rough around the edges, but the data here is kind of interesting to look at, especially with all the graduating kids right now.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is neat, but lacks sufficient granularity in terms of job category to be very meaningful to ESRM majors.

CSV Fingerprint Viewer

CSV Fingerprint Viewer | Capstone: An ESRM Coda | Scoop.it

To make it easier to spot mistakes, I've made a "CSV Fingerprint" viewer (named after the "Fashion Fingerprints" from The New York Times's "Front Row to Fashion Week" interactive ). The idea is to provide a birdseye view of the file without too much distracting detail. The idea is similar to Tufte's Image Quilts...a qualitative view, as opposed to a rendering of the data in the file themselves. In this sense, the CSV Fingerprint is a sort of meta visualization.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

CSV Fingerprint by Victor Powell provides a simple visual way to spot errors with your CSV data file.  It generates color patterns and in so doing allows you a rapid way to diagnose coding or data entry inconsistencies.

In 2013 California had world’s 8th-largest economy

California’s economy has overtaken Russia and Italy, with the state now ranked as the world’s eighth-largest economy.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

It is still key to understand that as bad as many of us think we have it here in California, we are pretty fortunate to be one of the top economies in the world in terms of gross dollars generated.  Even with the economic disparities that exist and are growing, we have a tremendous capacity to do effective management.  And many of my colleagues around the world can only dream of the options we have access to here.  Don't lose sight of that.
