One of the basic strategies ESL teachers abroad soon learn, unless they like doing things the hard way all the time, is where the best online teaching resources are (and how to use them).

wanderingsalsero's comment, June 29, 2015 3:00 PM
I think one of the challenges for teachers finding effective tools is 'finding tools that resemble something the students already like to do'. And what are the kids doing now: It's social media. That's why I think this tool that I found a few days ago is so cool and I plan in integrating it into the website I'm setting up. I've got my domain and everything: http://wanderingsalsero.gfriend.com . I was introduced to the owner of the company by a fellow I used to do some writing for and I'll be talking to him tonight to get more information about their planned expansion of the modules on the site but, considering it's all free anyway, even what they've got right now is very valuable.
wanderingsalsero's curator insight, July 6, 2015 7:25 PM

As I delve more and more into online ESL resources I have yet to see anything that compares to the gFriend concept. Not only does it address the immediate needs a the larger number of students (i.e. free, basic, and easily accessible) but it's just plan fun. The people I've given the site access to all say they love it. They're available here:

Concordia Lutheran College Toowoomba - A Christian co-educational P-12 Day & Boarding School

Concordia Lutheran College Toowoomba - A Christian co-educational P-12 Day & Boarding School | Educational Personal Learning Network | Scoop.it
Concordia Lutheran College Toowoomba is a Christian co-educational P-12 Day & Boarding School of the Lutheran Church of Australia.
Rosie Peel's insight:

For many families, Toowoomba is a favoured location for boarding students. Although we know school can never replace home, we try to come as close as possible.

Concordia boasts some of the most modern boarding facilities available. Accommodation is available for over 200 students in four boarding houses, with a maximum of four students in each room. Each student has an individual bed-study unit with access to computers, common rooms and leisure facilities.

While maintaining firm but caring discipline, house parents are aware that good, clean fun is a necessity for everyone. They devise creative and enjoyable activities such as tournaments, camps, barbecues, theatre and water park visits.

Phil Chappell's curator insight, May 16, 2013 4:45 PM

Using the flipped classroom model for language teaching doesn't have to be complicated. The question remains, what about the students who haven't worked with the materials before class? Ethical considerations?

Julienovak's curator insight, October 11, 2013 11:21 AM

I love this idea! For people that are intrinsically motivated to learn a language, I think this will help them to do it quickly. Class is only about interaction and demonstrating what you have learned on your own time.

I ran TeachMeet style CPD last year (in my own time) explaining and showing how to incorporate into the classroom or PLN; much of which was not taken on board. I covered and could do all 36!

Well done Linda. Sorry the question sounded like an attack...it was ment to be a general question for everyone :) How frustrating that all your hard work fell on deaf ears. You can only keep trying.

These are the 36 digital things that a 21st Century Teacher Should Be Able To Do. I do not have a problem with that, but they exclude the relational things we need to do and we should not.
