Word Booster

Word Booster | ESL links for my students | Scoop.it

It gives you a list of words you are likely to look up in the dictionary as far as the given text is concerned, guesses a good dictionary definition for the words along with example sentences. And finally, it also makes a quiz for the words using both the definitions and example sentences. (Of course we give you the answer key too.)

This is a great free tool for creating word lists and vocabulary quizzes from online text. It works within minutes. A great time saver.

Hello Nik! I am Andrew, the creator of Word Booster. Thanks for writing about us! We are holding a webinar on Sept. 8th of 2017 at 10:30 GMT, and you could hear the journey of how we have developed Word Booster. (https://forum.oxforddictionaries.com/api/discussion/78/webinar-word-booster-the-making-of-of-the-oxford-dictionaries-api-competition-winner#latest) We won the first prize at Oxford Dictionaries API Contest 2017.

If you are using higher level text for your ESL/EFL students to read, you might want to take a few minutes and check this site out.  It works with online articles, and by just copying and pasting the URL, in less than 60 seconds, you will have vocabulary words highlighted, a word list with definitions and a vocabulary quiz with an answer key.  I love that it did all of that work for me in less time than it took me to check my log in and check my email!

As a resource for learning about almost anything, but particularly for language learning it is an incredibly valuable tool and a tool that many third party companies have started to build on and exploit to make its use easier and more engaging.

Many tools that can help educators exploit the learning potential of YouTube with a particular focus on English language learning. I hope you can enjoy these tools and if you do work in an institution where YouTube is still blocked perhaps you can use this article to help persuade the people responsible that the benefits of making the resource available far outweigh the manageable risks that it can create.
