Three Focusing Activities to Engage Students in the First 5 Minutes of Class | eScience | Scoop.it
When I teach workshops about designing the flipped classroom, I always encourage faculty to think carefully about the first five minutes of class. In my lesson plan template, one of the first tasks we discuss when planning in-class time is to prepare what I call a “focusing activity.”

Social Learning Vs Informal Learning: Can You Tell The Difference?

Social Learning Vs Informal Learning: Can You Tell The Difference? | eScience | Scoop.it

Learning can happen anytime, anywhere, with those around us serving as invaluable sources of inspiration, experience, and knowledge. In many respects, the world is our teacher, but we must be aware of how to tap into the educational opportunities it can offer. Both social and informal learning models are rooted in this ideology.

How Turning Math Into a Maker Workshop Can Bring Calculations to Life - Mind/Shift

How Turning Math Into a Maker Workshop Can Bring Calculations to Life - Mind/Shift | eScience | Scoop.it
It might have been the banana piano. Or perhaps the bongos, made from lemons that students had plucked from the citrus tree at school. Elizabeth Little, who teaches middle school math and science, doesn’t know exactly which of the hands-on projects she introduced to her remedial math class turned the class around. But by the end of the school year, all her math students, not just those needing extra support, were clamoring for more math.

How did this happen?

Creating engagement through interactive infographics

Creating engagement through interactive infographics | eScience | Scoop.it

I’ve been a long term advocate of the use of infographics in education and especially enjoy thinking of ways that students can be encouraged to engage with and question the content as well as create their own graphics, so when I rediscovered Visme.co I was really delighted to find the tool that I once thought was a PowerPoint substitute for creating online presentations had turned into an awesome interactive infographic creator.

Are the High-Tech, Active Learning
Classrooms Worth It?

Several institutions have redesigned traditional learning spaces to better realize the potential of active, experiential learning. We compare student performance in traditional and active learning classrooms in a large, introductory biology course using the same syllabus, course goals, exams, and instructor. Using ACT scores as predictive, we found that students in the active learning classroom outperformed expectations, whereas those in the traditional classroom did not.

Class Tech Integrate : iPad Coding Apps for Beginners

Class Tech Integrate : iPad Coding Apps for Beginners | eScience | Scoop.it
As we approach Computer Science in Education Week this year. I wanted to share 3 iPad apps that are great for your young students to use for their Hour of Code. The age/grade ranges are suggestions, you may have to differentiate accordingly for your students. REMEMBER: "Hour of Code" doesn't mean that a child needs to be on an app for a solid hour non-stop. Ten minutes a day here or there would be great for our young coders.
