Poor digital literacy is an esafety problem - on a pratical level it leaves you vulnerable to malware, ransom ware and spam. However, it also reduces your confidence and blocks you from finding out about the full benefits that technology and access to the Internet can bring - both personally and in business. If people online already have problems with apps, phishing and keeping up to date with software upgrades, then how will the new generation of computer and internet users cope? Who told you about copy & paste and what 'cc' mean't in an email? Who explained what a browser was and how to avoid scam messages?

RSPH and the Young Health Movement have published a new report, #StatusOfMind, examining the positive and negative effects of social media on young people’s health.

The report includes a league table of social media platforms according to their impact on young people’s mental health. YouTube tops the table as the most positive with Instagram and Snapchat coming out as the most detrimental to young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

The Irish government are following suit and increasing the rights of legal recourse for victims of stalking and revenge postings. The UK progressed similar legislation last year with the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, which has specific amendments dealing with these offences.

GRID is an invaluable resource developed by the family safety Institute (FOSI) and UNICEF. It gives a breakdown of each countries child and Internet safety activities, with relevant legislation, organisation involved, education activities (although there is a strong English curriculum bias for the UK record) and valid research relating to the countries activities.

Aged 12 - 21? Have you say about cyberbullying by completing a European wide survey. The European Parliament has recently commissioned a ‘Research paper on cyberbullying among young people’. Conducted by Milieu, it aims to provide information on the nature of cyberbullying among young people in the EU, and on Member States’ legislation and policies focused on preventing and tackling cyberbullying. To achieve this objective, European Parliament have launched a survey among young people (aged 12 to 21) to collect their views on cyberbullying and to test good practices and recommendations identified through research at national level. If you are between 12 and 21 years old, you are invited to complete the survey here. It is also avalilable in 9 other languages:

Launched in London on 17 March 2016, by Rachel Rosen, the report surveyed teachers and young people aged between 13-20.

 Results show a generation of young people torn between positive feelings towards the internet (74.5% report that it makes them happy), yet an acknowledgement that there are areas they would tell friends to avoid.

 36% of young people who were surveyed admit they would suggest friends avoid Facebook if they were feeling worried or upset.
