A three-year trial has shown that these potatoes can thrive despite being exposed to late onset blight.

That disease has plagued farmers for generations and it triggered the Irish potato famine in the 1840s.

EU approval is needed before commercial cultivation of this GM crop can take place.

Seed dispersal gets a test in carved-out 'habitat corridors'

Seed dispersal gets a test in carved-out 'habitat corridors' | Erba Volant - Applied Plant Science | Scoop.it
Field ecologists go to great lengths to get data: radio collars and automatic video cameras are only two of their creative techniques for documenting the natural world. So when a group of ecologists set out to see how wind moves seeds through isolated patches of habitat carved into a longleaf pine plantation in South Carolina, they twisted colored yarn to create mock seeds that would drift with the wind much like native seeds.

Antarctic moss lives after 1,500+ years under ice | Erba Volant - Applied Plant Science | Scoop.it
Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey and University of Reading report in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on March 17 that Antarctic mosses can essentially come back to life after 1,500 completely inactive years under the ice. Prior to this finding, direct regeneration from frozen plant material had been demonstrated after 20 years at most. Beyond that, only microbes had been shown to be capable of revival after so many years on hold.

Walkers in the Scottish countryside are being urged to record sightings of juniper bushes which may be affected by a deadly fungal disease.

Probiotics, fiber continue to steal market share from GI remedies | Erba Volant - Applied Plant Science | Scoop.it
Digestive issues are all too familiar to Americans, as roughly nine out of 10 (86%) say they’ve dealt with some type of gastrointestinal or digestive trouble in the past year, according to a recent study from Mintel.
