Connecting Social Learning to e-Learning

Connecting Social Learning to e-Learning | Era Digital - um olhar ciberantropológico | Scoop.it

Social constructionism involves the need for collaboration. People learn by expressing something for others to see, understanding the context of others, and observing their peers. Traditional e-learning courses do not facilitate social interaction with other learners. We can now fill this void by connecting learners on social media or social learning platforms to discuss application of the e-learning course content. Using these platforms, learners can communicate with each other instantly, and reach a broad audience. We can design our e-learning to use social media as part of our activities, interactions, and research. By embracing social media as a tool for e-learning collaborative efforts, we can continue to improve the learning experience of online learners.

Connected Learning Manifesto for Connected Educator Month

Connected Learning Manifesto for Connected Educator Month | Era Digital - um olhar ciberantropológico | Scoop.it

"A revolution in technology has transformed the way we can find each other, interact, and collaborate to create knowledge as connected learners." (Connected Learning Manifesto - http://plpnetwork.com/2012/07/23/connected-learning-manifesto/)

Justin Marquis wrote suggestions to also be added to the Manifesto and to further the discussion about the impact of connected learning. He focused on these topics:
- Connectivity/Collaboration
- Empowerment/Self-Directed Learning
- Creativity/Innovation
- Diversity/Breaking Down Boundaries
- Self-Awareness/Reflection
- Lifelong Learning

Really agree with the author’s statement: “Connected Learning helps develop the literacy skills necessary to survive in a hi-tech world.”

The Manifesto wants to hear from you. Add your thoughts, statements, or strong assertions to the Connected Learning Manifesto. - http://plpnetwork.com/2012/07/23/connected-learning-manifesto/

Ten Steps Toward Universal Design of Online Courses

Ten Steps Toward Universal Design of Online Courses | Era Digital - um olhar ciberantropológico | Scoop.it

Implementing the principles of universal design in online learning means anticipating the diversity of students that may enroll in your course and planning accordingly. These ten key elements will greatly enhance the accessibility and usability of your course for students with and without disabilities.

Step 1: Develop content first, then design.
Step 2: Provide simple, consistent navigation.
Step 3: Include an accommodation statement.
Step 4: Choose CMS tools carefully.
Step 5: Model and teach good discussion board etiquette.
Step 6: Use color with care.
Step 7: Provide accessible document formats.
Step 8: Choose fonts carefully.
Step 9: Convert PowerPoint™ to accessible HTML.
Step 10: If it's auditory make it visual; if it is visual make it auditory.

Angela C. Dowd's comment, February 25, 2013 12:32 PM
This video emphasizes that relationships are important in the success of online learning. Social video technology adds more of a "human touch" to an online course. The narrator notes that layering videos with text supports students with cognitive learning disabilities. She also notes that the more informal ways of creating video and screenshots are more accessible to educators...which I think is true.
