Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom

Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom | Era Digital - um olhar ciberantropológico | Scoop.it

That we have evolved our favorite forms of communication is obvious without more than simply watching our students walk through the hallways. It would be easy to demonize social media and each medium that it provides for human interaction. But it would be educationally valuable to embrace it, turning it into an opportunity for our students to develop an appreciation for the advanced cognitive skills they employ on a daily basis. Why not study the highly visual communication models connecting the thoughts that mean the most to them with the social networks where they live their lives?

Visual literacy matters

Visual literacy is the ability to:

  1. Process and make meaning of information presented in an image.
  2. Communicate our own ideas through principles of design.
  3. Create our own messages that capture our visual thinking in a way that conceptualizes problems to given solutions.
Ness Crouch's curator insight, March 28, 2014 9:00 PM

Visual Literacy has a new emphasis in the Australian Curriculum. This is certainly a good article to give ideas for embedding some good quality practice in digital learning.

Conflating MOOCs with all of online education

Conflating MOOCs with all of online education | Era Digital - um olhar ciberantropológico | Scoop.it

"I stumbled across this article brought to my attention by a few different people from my network and I wanted to briefly mention my take on the issue.  The article has Professor Mary Beard of Cambridge warning of the dangers of MOOCs as a means of subverting the teacher/student dynamic in favor of tutors or automated grading mechanisms. I am going to err on the side of caution in my response here as I have the distinct impression that some of the problem I had with this article was the editorial/journalistic framing of it rather than Professor Beard’s actual logic."

The pedagogy of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): the UK view

The pedagogy of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): the UK view | Era Digital - um olhar ciberantropológico | Scoop.it

This report addresses the question of pedagogy within the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): what kinds of MOOCs are currently offered in the UK; what it means to 'teach' in the open and at massive scale; and what kinds of demands and expectations are experienced by academics who teach MOOCs The phenomenon of Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, has attracted a great deal of reportage, debate and research over the past two years. One area, however, has been noticeably under-represented in these discussions: pedagogy. As learning and teaching in higher education (HE) continues to be high on the agenda of UK governments, HE providers and policy makers alike, it is vital that this aspect of one of the most significant developments in HE in recent years receives attention.
