O conceito de Comunidade de Prática (CoP) foi “cunhado” pelo teórico organizacional Etienner Wenger como comunidades que reuniam pessoas unidas informalmente – com responsabilidades no processo – por interesses comuns no aprendizado e principalmente na aplicação prática do apreendido. As diretrizes externas podem influenciar o trabalho nas comunidades, no entanto não impedem que os membros desenvolvam as práticas sociais, pois são sistemas auto-organizáveis. As Comunidades de Prática (CoP) podem existir em toda a instituição, tendo em vista que a sociedade é baseada na participação e não precisa de uma hierarquia rígida para existir. Têm estágios de desenvolvimento que se iniciam com o agrupamento por interesses ou necessidades, seguem para uma organização informal, têm o auge com os membros se engajando no desenvolvimento de práticas compartilhadas, segue com alguns participantes interessados na continuidade e, se amparada pelos recursos tecnológicos, são capazes de receber novos membros e ter o registro do que foi construído.
