Tweeting and moving around. A day of trips in Spain

Using geo-tagged tweets we have inferred users trips in Spain during a period of 55 days. User trips are defined as the movement between consecutive geo-tagged tweets by the same user within the day. The video shows those trips as a function of time. Colour is proportional to the velocity of the trip (blue = fast trip, magenta = slow trip).

The total number of trips is 107k made by 43k unique, anonymized users. Data was obtained from the Twitter API by requesting tweets geolocalized in Spain. Time of the day is shown in white.

The mobility patterns between municipalities in Spain are correlated with unemployment, so they can be used to infer the level of employment in different areas of Spain. Here is our research about that: arxiv-web3.library.cornell.edu/abs/1411.3140
