Japan Earthquake: Six Months Later

Japan Earthquake: Six Months Later | Epic pics | Scoop.it
the world commemorated the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, but Sunday had another significance for Japan. It marked six months since the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, a date now seared in the country's national consciousness. At 2:46 that afternoon, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck Japan offshore, triggering a tsunami wave of up to 10 meters (33 ft) that engulfed large parts of northeastern Japan and also damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, causing the worst nuclear crisis in decades. The current number of dead and missing is estimated to be 22,900. Gathered here are some recent images from the region, including 12 before-and-after photo pairs (starting with photo number two) that you can click to see the difference six months can make. 11 April 2011 - Tokyo, Japan. Greenpeace radiation experts Jan Vande Putte and Rianne Teule answer questions from journalists following a press conference in Tokyo.
Greenpeace announced results from extended radiation monitoring conducted in the greater Fukushima area: testing food and surface contamination, and have found radiation levels to be significant enough to call for the evacuation of pregnant women and children from high risk areas in Fukushima City and Koriyama.

Great Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami 2011 Japan…

Great Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami 2011 Japan… | Epic pics | Scoop.it
The Black Mouth - 37 Frames :

If tears were words, these reflections would have written themselves a thousand fold. We are back in Tokyo after our northbound Tohoku visit to aid with relief efforts and to start the process of documenting what is undoubtedly one of the most horrific natural disasters in recent history. The words won’t come easily, sometimes having a lens as a filter is a much preferred medium. Although I think my hands were shaking too much to be of any good. Hard-hitting journalists we are not. It’s not in our nature, with no avenue of disassociation. Hopefully simple, connected storytellers, we can...

Japan Earthquake: Two Weeks Later -

Japan Earthquake: Two Weeks Later - | Epic pics | Scoop.it
Alan Taylor - In Focus - The Atlantic
Two weeks after northeastern Japan was struck by a massive earthquake and tsunami, the cost of the disaster is becoming clearer. The Japanese government has estimated the direct damage at as much as $310 billion, making it the world's costliest-ever natural disaster. As of today, more than 10,000 deaths have been confirmed and another 17,000 people remain missing. At Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, it raised suspicions of a possible breach when two workers waded into water 10,000 times more radioactive than normal and suffered skin burns. Earthquake survivors return to their homes to collect what they can find, to mourn their losses, and try to find a sense of normalcy in lives that have been ripped apart. Collected here are recent images from northeastern Japan, 14 days after it was rocked by disaster on a historic scale. [46 photos]

Google Maps Street View of Battleship Island

Jacques Le Bris's insight:
