How the Parliament boosts its Facebook audience | eParticipate! | Scoop.it
The European Parliament’s popularity in social media has rocketed in recent
years despite a drop in citizens’ confidence in political parties and a
decreasing turnout at European elections.

"The European Parliament can boast over 375,000 fans on its page on Facebook, at the time of writing. It is among the top 10 public institutions worldwide for number of fans on the popular social media."

eParticipation: How NOT to do it! (GE) | eParticipate! | Scoop.it

Large infrastructure projects became controversial in Germany recently - not only since thousands protested against "Stuttgart 21" in the south.

This time, German authorities wanted to do it right and published a 349 pages pdf (available also in several smaller pdf parts) on energy infrastructure renewal online, open to be consulted and critized.

Hans-Dieter Zimmermann analysed the consultation platform and concludes: "The Information provision, as well as the process of the consultation are far from being low-threshold" - Also, personalization, individual information structuring are virtually not available - as are the comments of other participants until consultation is closed!

Democratizing the Eurozone —by Vivien Schmidt

Democratizing the Eurozone —by Vivien Schmidt | eParticipate! | Scoop.it

How was it possible, that we got to where we are right now with the EURO? Vivien Schmidt explains how flaws in the construction of the EU lead to bad decisions and calls for a more democratic EU!

Highlights:

Excessive intergovernmentalism lead to imbalances between EU institutions, in favour of the Council. The Commission is reduced to a secretariat + the European Parliament is totally left aside. Transparency and accountability suffer.

She demands: The "EU needs is to rebalance its institutional processes, by returning the European Parliament and the Commission to their traditional positions in the decision-making process".

-EU can be cast as ‘policy without politics'-

The Eurozone-policies are highly political, Schmidt locates them in the conservative and neo-liberal specturm, but the processes towards their creation did not mirror this need for democratic debate.

Hence, she concludes: "What the EU needs is ‘policy WITH politics.’"

That means that the important decisions on European level must be preceded by a real democratic process and debate.

She proposes to re-balance the architecture of the EU institutions, bringing the EP back in where it belongs and suggests a more legitimate Commission President.

--> In the end, it is the Europeans themselves that must demand these reforms and resist populist propositions of re-nationalisation.

Open Days 2012: behind the scenes in Parliament

Open Days 2012: behind the scenes in Parliament | eParticipate! | Scoop.it

For the 20th Time, Europeans have had the chance to visit key European Institutions in Brussels and enjoy a wide entertainment and information program.

I took part for the second time, this year better prepared, knowing in advance what events happen when and where and whom i could meet. Yet again, the Parliament had the best and most diverse offer. Taking part in a tour through the Justus Lipsius Building (Council of the EU) and standing in the room where more than once history has been made, was worth it, too!

"The European Institutions will mark this year's anniversary of the Schumann Declaration by opening its doors to citizens and offering them many activities that provide behind-the-scenes insights into Parliament's activities."
