Web literacy: Where the common core meets common sense

Web literacy: Where the common core meets common sense | eParenting and Parenting in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

"Are you as worried as we are that the overall impact of technology on our children’s ability to solve complex research problems is negative? Have you heard a child near you say, 'Just Google it,' when asked to describe the meaning of life? Research shows that students primarily use one search engine and then only look at the first page of results. They can quickly give up or settle for something 'close enough' when they don’t find the information they’re looking for. Huge amounts of time are being wasted in searches void of the rigor of research."

CMU professor writes parenting book - The Tartan | eParenting and Parenting in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

As we progress into the 21st century, the role of artificial intelligence and robotics has become an increasingly controversial topic. While the increasing presence of these technologies has brought conveniences into our lives — from intelligent personal assistants to robot-assisted surgery — it also raises many concerns, including the potential consequences of these technologies on the social and financial welfare of future generations. In his latest book, Parenting for Technology Futures Part 1: Education & Technology, Illah Nourbakhsh, a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, offers parenting advice on how to best prepare children for a technology-driven future.

Beyond his achievements as a professional, at the end of the day, Nourbakhsh is a father who carries the strong belief that parents must be active participants in the learning development of their children. “You cannot outsource it to a computer, and you cannot outsource it to the teacher,” he stated. “You have to be actively participating in that process if you want your kids to succeed.”

Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn - Mind/Shift

Why Kids Need to Move, Touch and Experience to Learn - Mind/Shift | eParenting and Parenting in the 21st Century | Scoop.it
When students use their bodies in the learning process, it can have a big effect, even if it seems silly or unconnected to the learning goal at hand. Researchers have found that when students use their bodies while doing mathematical storytelling (like with word problems, for example), it changes the way they think about math. “We understand language in a richer, fuller way if we can connect it to the actions we perform,” said Sian Beilock, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago.

Risk-Taking Leads to Learning for Teens Going Online -- Campus Technology | eParenting and Parenting in the 21st Century | Scoop.it
When you discover that a teen in your life has posted something astonishingly inappropriate online and you find yourself asking, "What was he or she thinking?" you wouldn't be alone. But there's also little you can do to stop the practice. According to research at Pennsylvania State University, that's just how teenagers approach their online activities. Whereas most adults think before undertaking a risky behavior, teens tend to take the risk and then seek help, said Haiyan Jia, post-doctoral scholar in the College of Information Sciences and Technology.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 12, 8:52 PM

The one that surprised me was the over sharing. That seems counter-intuitive, but forcing something to happen is learning. It is coercive. The one that is missing, but might be there implicitly is being a good role model and avoiding bullying as an adult.
