New ‘Subway Libraries’ Encourages Commuters To Read On-The-Go - DesignTAXI.com
"As a teacher, I was obsessed with cultivating a love of reading in my students. I love to read, loved it as a kid too. I'm equally compelled to ensure that my own child loves reading -- and he does. I well aware that I'm on a mission -- but I also know it's a worthy one! Here are ten suggestions for how any teacher, teaching any subject can participate in this mission, and how parents and administrators can help."

The importance of the teacher librarian is intrinsically linked to effective and responsive information curation and dissemination in distributed environments within and beyond the school. Use of Web 2.0 tools has become embedded in good practice, and information curation has extended beyond the library catalogue to library and school information management systems for bibliographic and media resources, and various organizational tools that reside beyond the school in web environments, such as Libguides, Diigo, Live Binders, wiki, Delicious, Google tools, RSS, media tools, netvibes, iGoogle, and many more.

Wednesday was just the kind of day we need more of in our libraries! Wollongong City Libraries (WCC) are taking charge of their future in a very positive way. Having decided that social media is ... "Libraries represent our values, expand our minds, help in the construction of our realities and test them. Libraries provide opportunities for the expansion of personal horizons, no matter what life circumstances have been." Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery OAM

Similar activities happen in school libraries. Does your admin know that this often 'just in time' service is offered or is frequently requested by users of your school library? " | Tech Help Desk is expanding to Monday, adding another session to the computer help sessions (previously the Computer Clinic) offered by Westchester Public Library for patrons in need of computer help. The Tech Help Desk is free one-on-one technology help on a first-come, first-serve basis. No registration is necessary. The staff will do its best to tackle computer problems as well as topics of choice, such as cellphones, eReaders, tablets, email, Internet or any other technology assistance you require. If the problem is severe enough, staff may recommend patrons see a computer professional to solve the problem. Patrons may bring in laptops or electronic devices to the help desk, but they are not allowed to bring desktop computers. Computers are available for use during Tech Help Desk hours." 'Even the hallways are possible collision spaces that can support learning. Working on this project is more like developing a series of themed environments—I like to think of them as unique learning boutiques—each with a different intended purpose, style, and personality. You go here for your multimedia projects, you go here to work on group projects, you go here for casual collaboration, you go here for quiet study.'

"To envision what's planned, think along the lines of an Internet cafe — without the food and lattes. Imagine a place where students stop by for 10 minutes to do some research on their laptops while sitting on stools positioned on a polished wooden floor. Nearby, a plasma television streams student-created films, artwork and multimedia projects."
Technology is not value-free. John Merrow explains how to turn kids — who are digital natives — into good digital citizens. Schools today must provide opportunities for young people to create knowledge out of the swirling clouds of information that surround them 24/7. You went to school because that’s where the knowledge was stored. That was yesterday. Think how different today’s world is. Today’s young people need guidance in sifting through the flood of information and turning it into knowledge. They need to be able to formulate good questions — because computers have all the answers.

California's San Francisco State University is opening a newly-renovated library that will house only a quarter of the million or so books of its collection. "Deborah Masters, the university librarian, described the old library as a “rabbits’ warren” in the New York Times; the new structure has been updated to include open space as well as multimedia stations, group study areas and a café. Such renovations indeed recognize that libraries, or at least those on college and university campuses, are seen and used as places for students and others to gather and socialize. With more resources such as scholarly articles from academic journals and even books now available on the internet — and with a student population more used to accessing information via computers rather than by paging through books and hefty tomes of bound journals — devoting more of the physical space to multimedia resources makes sense."
