Multinational corporations are seizing and deforesting large tracts of land in Indonesia.
This new "Corporate colonialism" is bringing farmer deaths, poverty, human rights violations and ecological catastrophe to Indonesia with little recourse for the local communities who suffer the effects of projects touted as "growth," the Guardian's John Vidal reports. In the match between corporate power and the poor in the archipelago, the number of conflicts is on the rise....
"These developments are classed as 'growth' but what we are seeing is the collapse of communities of fisherfolk or farmers and increasing poverty," he continues. "We are exchanging biodiversity for monocultures, local economies for global ones, small-scale producers are becoming labourers and community land is becoming corporate. This is the direction we are going."
One problem for communities is the growing number of palm oil plantations, which, Henry Sarigih, founder of the Indonesian Peasant Union, says "has spawned a new poverty and is triggering a crisis of landlessness and hunger."... http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2013/05/26-0

▶ AFRICA: OUR MODERN, WESTERN AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM IS DESTROYING THE EARTH AND OUR HEALTH.
Today our food comes from across the world. More importantly, it is often produced in highly destructive ways, at the lowest possible cost.
Consequently our food production system is responsible for accelerating the rate of destruction of the very ecosystems we are reliant upon in order to maintain our delicate global environmental equilibrium.
We cut and clear the lungs of the world, our tropical rainforests, to feed livestock or grow dishonestly named "biofuels". We bulldoze natural filtration systems and the nurseries for life like wetlands and mangrove swamps to produce luxury foods for obese populations. http://allafrica.com/stories/201401071158.html?viewall=1

Multinational companies have been encouraged by the Indonesian Government to seize and deforest land owned by the indigenous peoples..
"The presence of palm oil plantations has spawned a new poverty and is triggering a crisis of landlessness and hunger. Human rights violations keep occurring around natural resources in the country and intimidation, forced evictions and torture are common," said Sarigih. "There are thousands of cases that have not surfaced. Many remain hidden, especially by local authorities," he says....
