Bringing American Junk Food and Processed Diets to foreign markets - VIDEO - El Salvador Pays The Price

Bringing American Junk Food and Processed Diets to foreign markets - VIDEO - El Salvador Pays The Price | Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Sustainability, SocioEconomic, Community | Scoop.it

PBS NEWSHOUR: January 23, 2013

This is Santa Ana, El Salvador, where the American shopping mall and diet have arrived. It's El Salvador's second largest city, but the food and the waistlines are straight out of the United States.

Companies like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and McDonald's have become part of the local diet. Junk food here is cheap, and it's everywhere, from the mall to the most remote villages.

In cities like Santa Ana, junk food is leading to a very American problem: obesity. But in the countryside, it's causing something different... young children have rotten teeth... http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/world/jan-june13/salvador_01-03.html

pdjmoo's insight:

As American corporations seek new markets for their fast, processed, unhealthy foods, we can see here the impact devastating human health as they  "colonize" developing/emerging nations into a western mindset, destroying their cultural way of life and health...and of course, along with that goes their removal from subsistence farming and feeding themselves, making them dependent on great tasting, chemical laden western food with minimum health systems to support the negative downturn.  This in turn, creates poverty and decline as more and more they become dependent on a multi-national USA corporate culture of consumerism.  Everything suffers: humanity and the environment take a drastic downturn.
