Raising the bar of CSR in the Arab region - Arabia CSR Network | Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Sustainability, SocioEconomic, Community | Scoop.it

Dec. 24, 2012 ElcaMedia

, Interview with the President & CEO of the Arabia CSR Network

"The Arabs have traditionally been experts at resource conservation.

When you live in the desert, you respect the few oases that you have; you use your water responsibly, you treat your flora and fauna well.

But a growing city, with oil-wealth impacting every aspect of its life, changes things; which is why I felt that there was a need for a concerted effort to bring people back to those traditional values.... http://www.elcamedia.com/blog/?p=310

Published on Sep 30, 2012

What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? This video clip tries to give competent but also entertaining answers to this question. The video is part of series "in a little green bag" at the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland.

Refusing to be accountable: Business hollows out new EU corporate social responsibility rules. | Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Sustainability, SocioEconomic, Community | Scoop.it

April 17, 2013 Corporate Europe Observatory

As a result of the economic crisis there is a widespread expectation that businesses should be more accountable to society. One important step in that direction would be to require companies to publish data on their social and environmental impacts across the supply chain. But the European Commission's new proposal on Corporate Social Responsibility reporting has been weakened by industry pressure to the extent that it is now virtually meaningless... http://corporateeurope.org/publications/refusing-be-accountable

Parting Ways with Public Trading - The Limitations For Change and Transformation

May 10, 2013 Harvard Business Review

Privately-held companies have a better chance of retaining a leadership position.

One of the dilemmas of firms in rapidly transforming environments is that their ownership structure may get in the way of making tough decisions. Investors in publicly traded companies are understood to desire stable, predictable earnings and growth. But such expectations are unrealistic in many industries. As noted management expert Geoffrey Moore told me with respect to high-velocity competition, "I'm not sure you ever want to be in the public markets." The problems with public markets and quarter-by-quarter thinking are many, but for companies in fast-changing environments the biggest issue is that public markets are not patient — miss a quarter and the punishment can be severe.... http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/05/parting_ways_with_public_tradi.html?referral=00563&cm_mmc=email-_-newsletter-_-daily_alert-_-alert_date&utm_source=newsletter_daily_alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=alert_date

pdjmoo's insight:

Corporations should seize this moment to lead the charge on investing in improving human rights and reasonable working conditions and wages within their supply chains, not capitalizing on slave labor and driving countries to meet their incessant demands so they can increase their bottom-line quarterly profits.

Any company who bases their strategy and promotion on this foundation would become a major force within the global consumer world.   Better quality, higher price, means less and longer lasting products.  More, bigger, faster is a death song to society.  The consumer is getting smarter by the minute and corporations exist only because of human beings within their networks.   Human and environmental capital are priceless.

It would be a joy to see companies step out and actively play a major role in environmentally sound, ethically humane contractual agreements that uplifts the population of the supply chain countries they draw on -- particularly in the poorer countries they exploit. The days of colonialism are over as are the days of blackmailing countries to produce more for less at the expense of shifting contracts to another country.  Change the system.

We cannot continue focusing only on increasing profits, at the expense of the poor.

"The Venus Project". A view toward a more beneficial, caring value system

This video presentation advocates a new socio-economic system, which is updated to present-day knowledge, featuring the life-long work of Social Engineer, Futurist, Inventor and Industrial Designer Jacque Fresco, which he calls a Resource-Based Economy. This documentary details the root causes of the systemic value disorders and detrimental symptoms caused by our current established system....

Paradise or Oblivion, by The Venus Project, introduces the viewer to a more appropriate value system that would be required to enable this caring and holistic approach to benefit human civilization. This alternative surpasses the need for a monetary-based, controlled, and scarcity-oriented environment, which we find ourselves in today.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KphWsnhZ4Ag#!

Bios – life. Mimicry – to copy.

... Einstein famously said ‘Look deep into nature and you shall find the answer.’ ...

Time To Transform?

It has become patently clear to many that business is undergoing a metamorphosis. Due to a perfect storm of social, economic and environmental factors, organizations have little option other than to seek out opportunities in these volatile times, adapt and evolve to what the book The Nature of Business refers to as “firms of the future” – businesses more akin to living organisms than mechanistic monoliths designed for the Industrial Era. SUSTAINABILITY SHOULD FOCUS ON THE WHOLE INTER-CONNECTED WEB OF LIFE, NOT JUST ON HUMAN PROSPERITY

May 17, 2013 Guardian Sustainable Business

Corporate visions of sustainability focus on material prosperity – but leaders must respect the soul as well as the soil, writes Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee...

As our world stumbles to the brink of ecological collapse, the "tipping point" of irreversible climate change, sustainability has become a vital issue. But in order to consider the question of sustainability, it is important to begin with the question: who or what is being sustained?

Does sustainability refer to sustained economic growth, and an environment that is able to maintain the status quo with our energy-intensive, consumer driven needs? Or does sustainability refer to the whole ecosystem, an interconnected web of life with its vast and rich diversity of species? What is the relationship between sustainability and the economy?

Few Executives Are Self-Aware - Here, Women Have the Edge

May 9, 2013 Harvard Business Review

A new study by Hay Group shows that female leaders tend to have better interpersonal skills.

Research by Hay Group, culled from its 17,000-person behavioral competency database in 2012, finds that when it comes to empathy, influence, and the ability to manage conflicts in the executive level, women show more skill than men. Specifically, women are more likely to show empathy as a strength, demonstrate strong ability in conflict management, show skills in influence, and have a sense of self-awareness... http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/05/few_executives_are_self-aware.html?referral=00563&cm_mmc=email-_-newsletter-_-daily_alert-_-alert_date&utm_source=newsletter_daily_alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=alert_date

Baby's first rifle? The Crickett Firearms website is down, but we've got their photo gallery of armed tykes right here.

Clearly the issue of parental responsibility is at the center of this tragedy. But against the backdrop of the Newtown massacre and ongoing national debate over regulating firearms, it also points back to the big business of guns—including how the industry profits from products aimed at children.

The Pennsylvania-based maker of Crickett rifles, Keystone Sporting Arms, markets its guns with the slogan "My First Rifle." They are available with different barrel and stock designs, including some made in hot pink to appeal to young girls.... http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/05/crickett-rifle-marketing-kids

The giants of the green world that profit from the planet's destruction | Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Sustainability, SocioEconomic, Community | Scoop.it

May 2, 2013 The Guardian UK Naomi Klein:

A new movement has erupted demanding divestment from fossil fuel polluters – and Big Green is in their sights...

Maybe that shouldn't come as a complete surprise, since some of the most powerful and wealthiest environmental organisations have long behaved as if they had a stake in the oil and gas industry. They led the climate movement down various dead ends: carbon trading, carbon offsets, natural gas as a "bridge fuel" – what these policies all held in common is that they created the illusion of progress while allowing the fossil fuel companies to keep mining, drilling and fracking with abandon. We always knew that the groups pushing hardest for these false solutions took donations from, and formed corporate partnerships with, the big emitters. But this was explained away as an attempt at constructive engagement – using the power of the market to fix market failures.

Now it turns out that some of these groups are literally part-owners of the industry causing the crisis they are purportedly trying to solve. And the money the green groups have to play with is serious.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/may/03/giants-green-world-profit-planets-destruction

U.S. GMO food labeling drive has biotech industry biting back with media onslaught

U.S. GMO food labeling drive has biotech industry biting back with media onslaught | Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, Sustainability, SocioEconomic, Community | Scoop.it

May 2, 2014 - CHICAGO (Reuters) -

New efforts to force labeling of foods made with genetically modified crops, including a bill introduced by U.S. lawmakers Wednesday, have struck a nerve with biotech crop developers who say they are rushing to roll out a broad strategy to "combat" consumer concerns about their products.

Executives from Monsanto Co., DuPont, and Dow Chemical, among the world's largest developers of biotech crops and the chemicals used to help produce them, told Reuters this week they are putting together a campaign aimed at turning the tide on what they acknowledge is a growing public sentiment against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) used as ingredients in the nation's food supply... http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/25/us-usa-gmo-labeling-idUSBRE93O18S20130425
