Some ‘bee-friendly’ plants treated with harmful pesticides, study finds | Environment and Wildlife | Scoop.it
Half of the “bee-friendly” plants sampled among nursery plants in B.C. tested positive for a class of pesticides implicated in widespread bee die-offs, according to a new study released by a consortium of environmental groups in the United States and Canada. Plants widely promoted as attractive to pollinators were collected from London, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec and Vancouver-area nurseries and home stores and tested for the presence of neonicotinoids, also known as neonics, a class of pesticides mainly used on corn and soybean seed, but also on lawns and nursery plants, according to the report released Wednesday by Friends of the Earth Canada.

Tricolored blackbird population falling at alarming rate

Tricolored blackbird population falling at alarming rate | Environment and Wildlife | Scoop.it
Grains grown to feed the cows resemble the lost tules and cattails that the picturesque songbirds once called home, providing the flocks new sanctuary to raise their young. Scientists say the blades that pluck the feed crops are also mowing down thousands of baby blackbirds and eggs - one reason the bird is in rapid decline. With much of California's historical wetlands dried up, the bird has struggled to find habitat of sufficient size. Fields of the wheat-rye hybrid triticale, grown to feed dairy cattle, are good places for blackbirds to reproduce. A program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture pays dairy owners to harvest their crop only after the birds' young are born and able to fly away.
