Current and potential carbon stocks of trees in urban parking lots in towns of the Eastern Cape, South Africa

EnviroJMS's insight:

This article is very interesting because it was produced by the Environmental department here at Rhodes and because it talks about putting carbon stock in shopping centre parking lots. These Carbon stocks contribute to urban carbon mitigation efforts, improve aesthetics and the shopping experience of consumers, whilst adding to urban biodiversity.

This will have a major impact of improving our environment.

Statistics South Africa : This web site requires JavaScript

EnviroJMS's insight:

This article from Stats SA shows the increase in petrol prices and how this affects many other industries in the process. This is important when thinking about how petrol is a non-renewable energy that is steadily running out and becoming unavailable and hence an increase in prices. This shows how reliable South Africa is on petrol and thus reiterating the idea of alternative energy sources.

South Africa has few oil reserves, and therefore is forced to consider every energy possibility to meet its growing demand. Coal plays a large part in its energy mix, abut shale
EnviroJMS's insight:

This may seem unrelated to hybrid technology but this article helps one understand the industry and the kind of structure that has. This article helps one see why the country economically needs these non-newable sources such as coal and oil to make profits.
