Cet article relaie deux études sur l'impact de la complexité sur le productivité et sur l'environnement de travail. Sans évoquer directement la question de la hiérarchie "plate", il l'évoque par l'une de ses 7 recommandations pour simplifier les organisations : "réduire les échelons hiérarchiques et élargir les responsabilités".

La recommandation touchant à la gentillesse excessive ne sont rien de moins que des orientations vers ce qui fait le quotidien de Yuman : autoriser la parole et le partage, rendre les réunions efficaces, être constructifs dans les retours.

Peer production, a major example of network collaboration, is defined here as "large-scale collaborative engagement by groups of individuals who come together to produce products more complex than they could have produced on their own."

It has 3 characteristics which make it great for experimenting, innovating, and adapting to complex environments: 

- decentralization of conception and execution of problems and solutions;

- harnessing of diverse motivations;

- and separation of governance and management from property and contract.

An interesting reflection on what our networked information economy requires for our organizations to thrive.

Today’s economy relies on knowledge, needing investments and creating value.  Intellectual capital is a collective asset.  Lean requires to maximize the use of human potential, with the ability to trust being the number one requirement.  The best organization for facilitating human capital is no longer the command and control model which imitated the military after WWII.

When stating that the people of an organization are its main asset, leaders have to keep in mind that it is what they know rather than what they do that gives meaning to their statement.

Many organizations will have to transform if they want to embrace a culture which favors knowledge transfer.  Improvement in the workplace and innovation is a whole culture, not just a corporate statement, it requires true teamwork: “an environment in the larger organization that creates and sustains relationships of trust, support, respect, independence and collaboration.”  It will make the difference between a good company and a great company.

Social innovation matters more than technical innovation.  The questions asked at the very beginning of the article deserve our attention: they refer to working together, cross-company networks, effective collaboration across cultures or places, expertise and information sharing and co-creation processes.  The author, rather than a golden rule, offers what she calls rules of thumb to build effective cross-company networks : mapping the existing network first, focusing on diverse rather than numerous relationships, and tackling people alignment issues as early as possible.

La durée de vie moyenne de l'entreprise traditionnelle tend à diminuer, principalement en raison d'une incapacité à s'adapter au rythme de changement rapide des technologies et à se repenser en termes numériques modernes. Peut-elle éviter l'obsolescence et comment ?
YUMAN's insight:

Nous avons déjà abordé la question de l'impact des pratiques des entreprises du numérique, et des méthodes collaboratives, sur les entreprises dites traditionnelles.

L'article soulève la question de la survie de ces entreprises, qui sont menacées par leur "incapacité à s'adapter au rythme de changement rapide des technologies actuelles". Avec l'exemple de SAP, l'auteur observe le passage à un modèle d'entreprise en réseau et collaboratif.

En conclusion : nous sommes d'accord que la question des outils (en l'occurence digitaux) n'est qu'une partie de la réponse. La vraie solution vient des entreprises qui préparent plutôt qu'elles ne subissent leur adaptation.
