Sustaining teacher control in a blog-based personal learning environment

Abstract

Various tools and services based on Web 2.0 (mainly blogs, wikis, social networking tools) are increasingly used in formal education to create personal learning environments, providing self-directed learners with more freedom, choice, and control over their learning. In such distributed and personalized learning environments, the traditional role of the teacher is being transformed into that of a facilitator. This change inevitably means a reduced level of control on the part of the teacher. This is evidenced, for example, in difficulties experienced in retaining the necessary levels of control when the learning process moves away from institutionally maintained systems to blog-based personal learning environments. In conducting a course in a formal education setting however, it is still essential for the teacher to retain control over certain learning activities, such as course enrolment, assignments, and the assessment process.

A course management plug-in for the WordPress blog platform called LePress was designed and developed as a possible solution to this problem. By using LePress, teachers are able to more easily manage and coordinate courses in a distributed blog-based environment. Teachers are able to regain control over some important aspects of online course management, while maintaining the learners’ freedom and choice for self-directed learning. This paper documents the results of a survey of a group of 37 teachers who used LePress for at least six months. The study demonstrates that by using LePress, teachers experienced an enhanced level of control over several aspects of the course and this reinforced their perception about the ease of use of the system.

In the past few years, emerging technologies (such as mobile devices or social networks) have rapidly spread into all areas of our life. However, while employees in SMEs increasingly use these technologies for private purposes and to a lesser extent for information seeking and informal learning, enterprises have not generally recognized the potential of such technologies for supporting learning.

As a consequence, the use of these emerging technologies and support for Personal Learning Environments have not been systematically taken up as a sustainable learning strategy that is integrated with other forms of learning at the workplace.

I was asked this question the other day and I thought it was a good one to explore in a blogpost.

For some people my constant tweeting, facebooking, skyping, emailing…. must be a bit overwhelming! And I know for a fact that the colleagues with whom I share an office think I’m a bit mad and waste all my time in these social networks. Well, (maybe) true – I’m a bit hyperactive, but I don’t see my activity online as “wasting” time. It’s actually really valuable to me, and it is only a reflection of how it has progressed. It was not always like that … it rather evolved to become what it is today!

Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to analyse the effect of the affordances of a virtual learning environment and a personal learning environment (PLE) in the configuration of the students' personal networks in a higher education context. The results are discussed in light of the adaptation of the students to the learning network made up by two undergraduate, inter-university and online courses. Besides, we also examine the influence of this effect in the learning process. The findings reflect the effectiveness of a PLE for facilitating student participation and for assisting students in the creation of larger and more balanced personal networks with richer social capital. However, the findings do not provide evidences about a difference in the learning performance between the two environments. From a methodological point of view, this paper serves as an illustration of the analysis of personal networks on digital data collected from technology-enhanced learning environments.

Thirdspace: Orchestrating collaborative activities in PLEs for formal Learning

ABSTRACT

This article presents ThirdSpace, a platform aiming at the integration of the learner centric and personalised Personal Learning Environments (PLE) with the more structured organisation of formal (institutional) learning. Towards this end, collaborative learning best practices are proposed to teachers through the WebCollage authoring tool. The resulting collaborative scripts are modelled using workflow technology and orchestrated automatically by a workflow engine. The ThirdSpace platform then allows the publication and monitoring of the learning activities in learners' PLEs. Thus, ThirdSpace enables the students to participate in the activities through their own self-configured PLEs, using the tools of their choice to engage both in individual and collaborative activities.

El proyecto UV- SFPIE-DOCE12-80520 (Resolución del Vicerectorat de Cultura i Igualtat de la Universitat de València del 23 de julio de 2012) de innovación educativa aplicada pretende contribuir a la docencia de la asignatura Historia de la Escuela desde una doble perspectiva: docente e investigadora. Desde la óptica docente, se elaboraran materiales didácticos abiertos y reutilizables que puedan ser empleados en la docencia de la materia, con el objetivo de que contribuyan cualitativamente al proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje del alumnado. Complementariamente, la vertiente investigadora del proyecto pretende evaluar la calidad y utilidad de dichos objetos de aprendizaje (OA) en un contexto docente aplicado, con el fin de contribuir a la mejora permanente de los materiales histórico-educativos puestos a disposición en formato abierto (Open-Acess). Sobre la base de la creación de un Personal Learning Network (PLN) se pondrá a disposición de la comunidad docente (profesorado y alumnado) un abanico de OA diseñados y clasificados por unidades temáticas correspondientes al programa de la asignatura Historia de la Escuela que podrán ser utilizados, evaluados o modificados por los usuarios suscritos a la red.
