Beyond institutions - personal learning in a networked world - by Stephen Downes

In this presentation I look at the needs and demands of people seeking learning with the models and designs offered by traditional institutions, and in the spirit of reclaiming learning describe a new network-based sysyetm of education with the learner managing his or her education.

Lots of useful references in this presentation by Stephen Downes to follow up and read round. Also Downes helpfully makes the distinction between personal and personalised learning which I think are being used interchangeably in some contexts without individuals realising they are different things.

Identidad digital, PLE y competencias

Identidad digital, PLE y competencias | Entornos Personales y Sociales de Aprendizaje | Scoop.it

Jean Floten's curator insight, February 20, 11:01 AM

WGU's mentor-supported, competency-based, online learning model is a model of Stage 3 learning.

Nichelle Plivelic's comment, March 6, 4:57 AM
There are three main stages to personalized learning, which involves the teacher figuring out how each student learns individually and establishing goals for the students. A teacher can change the physical layout if this helps(when working with children who are easily distracted, such as those with ADHD or autism, it's best to get rid of as many distractions as possible). The student will learn at their own pace in whatever way is the most effective.

How-to’s and link roundups on teaching with Twitter has been done many times before, but the topic is worth frequent revisiting and refreshing, especially in the context of the #FutureEd initiative and the Pedagogy Project by HASTAC Scholars.

The goal of this review is to help think through if, why, and how to use Twitter in our teaching and learning – especially for those who remain skeptical.

Personal Learning Environments and University Teacher Roles Explored using Delphi « Online Learning Update

by Zaffar Ahmed Shaikh, Shakeel Ahmed Khoja, AJET

This paper presents the results of research using an online Delphi method, which aimed to explore university teacher roles and readiness for learner-centred pedagogy, driven by personal learning environments (PLEs). Using a modified Policy Delphi technique, a group of researchers worked with 34 international experts who are university teachers by profession, but who are currently associated with PLEs as PLE-practising teachers, researchers, and developers. A questionnaire based on the relevant literature published between 2006 and 2012 was developed to serve the panel as the starting point for the Delphi debate. This questionnaire sought Delphi experts’ consensus on the names and task descriptions of 36 university teacher roles categorized into five core competencies. During the three rounds of this study, the experts changed the names of many roles and modified their task descriptions. The study concluded by identifying the 28 roles on which the Delphi panel was able to reach a consensus. The results also revealed that the university teacher today is ready to carry out the new roles suggested by this study.

What have I learned from Moodle and Mahara?

What have I learned from Moodle and Mahara? | Entornos Personales y Sociales de Aprendizaje | Scoop.it

After an initial test with WordPress (Buddypress) and Drupal (to exploit the benefits of using taxonomies to represent competency frameworks), the choice was made to use Moodle and Exabis, a competency-based ePortfolio integrated in Moodle. We thought that using Moodle would save us from bespoke developments required by Drupal or WordPress. Then, at a later stage, it was decided that Exabis would be replaced by Mahara. My colleague Niel (@NeilOSIT) would work on the development of the main version of the course,ePortfolio for Key Competencies, while I would work on an adaptation entitled Open Badges for Key Competencies in order to address different audiences and check how easy it is to re-purpose a learning module, in the perspective of future localisations (translation and adaptation to the target audience).

Practicising Moodle and Mahara raised a number of issues, some specific to Moodle, others to Mahara and eventually in making the two of them work together.

Usually when I try to convince people to look into PLEs, I get the same general questions/concerns. These are usually along the lines of “how will the separate systems ever communicate with each other?”, or “how will this scale?”, or “how would you do assessment in this model?” These are all very good questions, but potential also ones that are barking up the wrong tree so to say.

Finding the right sensemaking routines is crucial for Personal Knowledge Management! "Social filtering | Entornos Personales y Sociales de Aprendizaje | Scoop.it

In personal knowledge management, the key is finding small habits that can be developed, that over time yield big results, like grains of sand. My sense-making here comes through the habit of a fortnightly blog post. Finding what works for you is the focus of my PKM Workshops, with the next one beginning this Monday. The challenge is to find something that works for you and will last over time. This is probably the biggest hurdle in PKM.
