As others have noted, this approach is not only not authentic, it's borderline unethical. But how does it really differ from hiring consultants to design and write marketing material for your business?

The challenge of "ghost" social services like this is to do it transparently and ethically. It's definitely not "authentic. I've advised many clients on strategies and helped some move forward with team tweeting but always transparently. I'll be curious to hear how others think about this practice.

Thanks for your comment Malek. I think the days of "ghost" writing on social media are limited without open and honest disclosure and transparency. Nothing wrong with teams tweeting but many, including high profile personalities, authors, politicians and many others will resist. When the you know what hits the fan, that's when the trouble starts. Of course, when the intern screws up, you can always claim you were hacked LOL.

Not only can third parties tell a lot about your personality, sexuality, and politics by examinging Facebook Likes (see Researchers predict IQ, age, and more using only Facebook Likes http://sco.lt/522wPh), mapping your Twitter interactions can tell a lot about your social interactions as well.

 

When localized to the employees of a corporation, as a researcher did with Twitter, you can learn a tremendous amount of information about how the company works and what it's working on.

 

As former Sun CEO Scott McNealy once said, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it."

Twitter has become a human seismograph where news no longer breaks it tweets. We learned to speak in 140 characters or less. We’ve witnessed Tweets erupt into revolutions. Hashtags are now a way of life. And, we now live in a world where if it wasn’t tweeted, it didn’t happen. Life unfolds in a digital river where experiences and common interests are the ties that bind us. Twitter is indeed part of the fabric of how our world communicates and connects and it contributes to the evolution of our #digitallifestyle.

Mike Ellsworth's insight:

I just love the quote, "if it wasn't tweeted, it didn't happen" mainly because of two sayings I originated in the 70s and 80s. First came "If it's not electric, it doesn't work." Almost 40 years later, this one still has legs. The second saying was "If it's not on video, it didn't happen." Almost 30 years after the personal video revolution, this is truer than ever.

 

So I really wish I would have come up with Solis' aphorism!

 

But enough about me. As usual, Solis nails the subject: the growing importance of Twitter, which many still write off as vapid and inconsequential. Twitter and Nielsen (my old employer) have recently announced a new ratings system based on tweets. And the Nieman Lab saysTwitter is becoming a broadcast network for late adopters.

 

When I train on social media, I tell my skeptical audience that refusing to use Twitter because people say stupid things on it is like refusing to use the telephone because people say stupid things on it.

I found this piece particularly interesting and wanted to call your attention to it. It's one of those things we all experience everyday, but do we really stop to ask ourselves this question:

 

****Are You Mobilizing Communities or Just a Voice in the Crowd?

 

I've personally covered events online, tweeting the main points live and although I was able to filter and capture the essence of what was going on, I had to go back and really absorb the information and then try to apply it to my business effectively. (not always an easy task) :-)

 

It's a juggling act but one I think we're all experiencing on one level or another.

 

Excerpt:

 

Continuous Partial Attention (CPA) is the process of paying simultaneous but superficial attention to a number of sources of incoming information.

 

This term, coined by writer and consultant Linda Stone in 1998, aptly describes the scene at the recent Council of Public Relations Firms Critical Issues Forum on Social Revolution:

 

This is what particularly caught my attention:

 

**What was the unintended consequence (UC) - these being outcomes that are not intended by a purposeful action?

 

**They can be positive, negative or have a perverse effect contrary to what was originally intended.

 

 

****So are there any unintended consequences to compulsively tweeting from an event or otherwise?

 

This is a question I have yet to answer. It is sort of like waiting to see what the side effects of a drug will be years after it has been approved.

 

One UC of CPA may be that peoples’ attention spans (already truncated by USA Today and sound bite television) and

 

**related ability for analytic thought will be reduced to nanoseconds.

I just rescooped this article because I found it in another source, but here I look further into your collection and find it. I'm curating on the topic information overload and coping skills. I believe that curation can help you pay attention. I experienced this myself .. I was a conference. Many people were tweeting. I was tracking it with storify - doing content curation in real time with twitter versus tweeting helped me pay attention, quickly put together a coherrent record of what happened and make it unstandable to people not in the room.

I have covered a few conferences in real-time and it definitely makes you pay attention on more than one level. Being able to put it in a cohesive manner helping people understand what's happening is an art in itself and something you do very well.
