I haven't been a fan of Pinterest from the start. I've always thought that the opportunities to interact and actually create relationships was limited, which is why I've been mystified at why marketers and advertisers have been so high on the site. Sure, other people posting pictures of your products is cool, but social media is about relationships, not push marketing.
So the addition of the news feature may help Pinterest be more relevant as a community, rather than a dumping place for stuff people want.
