The Shift of the Role of the Teacher

The Shift of the Role of the Teacher | ENT | Scoop.it

We know today’s students will have to create their jobs, not look for jobs. They will compete with others around the globe. They will have jobs replaced by outsourcing and technology if their skills are easily replicated or duplicated.  To succeed, students will need creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.

They will need to be able to adapt to change, be resilient and able to work effectively in a variety of environments.

Why Learning Through Social Networks Is The Future

Why Learning Through Social Networks Is The Future | ENT | Scoop.it

Students Need Professional Learning Networks, Too

Learning to create, manage and promote a professional learning network (PLN) will soon become, if it’s not already, one of the most necessary and sought after skills for a global citizen, and as such, must become a prominent feature of any school curriculum.

Collaboration can be both a formal structure for learning activity but also an underpinning framework for engagement and fostering life-long learning.  Learning networks are part the new learning ecosystem and should be recognised and supported.

A myriad of threats:

* Employers often cannot assess data breach exposure on unmanaged BYODs

*Lost or stolen BYODs  that  contain sensitive data, with less than 1 in 4 can be remotely wiped.

* When BYODs bypass inbound filters normally applied to corporate devices, they’re vulnerable to malware

and the list goes on and on

TheSoulfulEMU's curator insight, September 24, 2013 10:12 AM

The Future Internet: Service Web 3.0

Future Internet - Supported by STI International: http://www.sti2.org

With over a billion users, today's Internet is arguably the most successful human artifact ever created. The Future Internet, an initiative driven by the European Union, has become a prime research focus of STI International and the Service Web 3.0 project.

In order to explain, promote, and attract new contributors, we created a video to be viewed by stakeholders, who may be non-experts, in a new generation Internet. The video outlines the basic themes of the European Union's Future Internet initiative.

These include: an Internet of Services, where services are ubiquitous; ===> an Internet of Things where in principle every physical object becomes an online addressable resource <===; a Mobile Internet where 24/7 seamless connectivity over multiple devices is the norm; and the need for semantics in order to meet the challenges presented by the dramatic increase in the scale of content and users.

New Research: Students Benefit from Learning That Intelligence Is Not Fixed

New Research: Students Benefit from Learning That Intelligence Is Not Fixed | ENT | Scoop.it
New research from Stanford is helping to build the case that nurturing a “growth mindset” can help many kids understand their true potential.

Teaching students that intelligence can grow and blossom with effort – rather than being a fixed trait they’re just born with – is gaining traction in progressive education circles. And new research from Stanford is helping to build the case that nurturing a “growth mindset” can help many kids understand their true potential.

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy | ENT | Scoop.it
The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.
