Geospatial awarness and application is important GIS Day allows people to learn about and plug in to present technology that helps make geopraphy more palpable and easier to understand. There are more and more resources and advancements that have been made available to teach us and simply things in the world around us. understanding relatability and awareness helps us to answer questions about geography that we might not know because of distance and allows those who are preparing to be social studies or history majors to communicate to their students a better understanding of the world around them, and as time passes more helpful resources will be teaching aides in the classroom

iPads open doors for students in poor school districts

iPads open doors for students in poor school districts | Enseñanza y aprendizajes efectivos | Scoop.it

"COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. -- For Alicia Silva, a single mother with three kids and three jobs, an iPad is out of reach.

Silva works as a part-time art teacher, seamstress and home-care provider, and like many hard-working parents, can't afford a tablet computer.

Sometime in the next few weeks, though, the Coachella Valley Unified School District will take care of that. It will issue an iPad to each of Silva's three children as part of a program that will provide them to all 19,000 students in the district, one of the state's poorest."

harish magan's comment, September 18, 2013 7:02 AM
It is very good to note that School administration is taking care of the needs of poor people by distributing it free. I think moren more corporate should come forward and help in eradicating this social difference between rich and poor.More technical advance in early stage will produce quality students who would be self sustaining and would discover many innovations which will change the future.
Steph's Journalism Group 2013's curator insight, October 4, 2013 3:56 AM

I find it very interesting that Coachella Valley Unified has found the resources to provide all children in the school with iPads. Although it is a good idea, as in this ever increasing technology dependent world it becomes essential for children to have access to the internet. With these iPads children can save a lot of money on text books and trips to do research in the libraries. This is especially helpful as a lot of the district is very poor as farming and similar jobs are in the majority(90 %). I do however feel that preschool children to not have a need for iPads and they are more likely to break them or lose them. The funding of iPads to preschool children could be put to better use. This story is engaging as it starts from the perspective of one family to get you interested and then widens into the whole school.

"As social media “follows” have risen in popularity, mere “blogging” seems old news, but it nonetheless remains a powerful–perhaps still the most powerful–way to distribute thinking, strategies, tools, and even curriculum to continue to support teachers, schools, and other growing sects in education.

This is by no means an exhaustive list–and like most “best of” lists, it’s maddeningly subjective. It’s also in no certain order–it’s just one list of the best education blogs for 2014. You’ll notice several well-known blogs, and some new faces as well. That was on purpose."

Sounds good. I liked the video I saw.

Liam Michelsohn's curator insight, October 21, 2013 7:27 PM

If the Owners of Chipotle are actually growing and raising their animals organically they have no choice but to approach their competitors aggressively.  Growing high volume quality food is a much more expensive and slow process then genetically modifying animals to create higher yields. I thought the commercial was beautifully done and struck a tone I wish I heard more often.

Shelby Porter's curator insight, November 4, 2013 10:29 AM

This video probably set some of the leading fast food chains and restuarants on edge. Chipotle is starting an organic agricultural revolution, and with good reason. Most fast food cooperations are like the scare crow foods in the video, not using one hundred percent animal products, and using chemicals to enhance them. It is like that in other places too. Mnay farmers now are breeding chickens to have much larger breasts because that is what is in demand. But none of this is good for our bodies. Chipotle is one of many organic companies trying to go back to the basics and feed us food that is also good for us. They are showing us that this agricultural revolution can feed the people of the world.

Melanie Faizer's curator insight, March 10, 2014 9:57 PM

Zeega.com is a great example of storytelling through aggregating and curating, and in addition, embedded, automated attribution. It removes much of the burden of copyright. From a storytelling perspective, it has limitless possibilities, but one of the challenges is finding that story worth telling. Some Zeega examples are beautifully executed; too many are (from a journalistic perspective) one-dimensional in their execution and not thought-provoking. We are still new at curating content, and it shows. Curating is another form of narrating: the story still needs a point, a trajectory.
