Pot for pets: Cannabis treatments catch on for dogs and cats

Pot for pets: Cannabis treatments catch on for dogs and cats | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Some pet owners say marijuana works better than veterinarian-approved drugs
Kenneth Weene's insight:
We Americans love our pets more than anything. If pot will help our dogs and cats, that may well push the legalization of marijuana over the top. From the anecdotes I've heard, it really does work, especially for animals that are in chronic pain and maybe dying from cancer. I sure would have given it to our dogs if it would have made the end less painful. I hated seeing them suffering. Shouldn't government policy aim for the reduction of pain and suffering among not only our pets but our people? Maybe that was what was missing in the Clinton campaign. How about a political party that wants to end pain and suffering and we can model it on how we would choose to treat our animals? Too bad PetSmart is taken; it might make a good informal name for that party. Anyway, no, I'm not high, just ruminating.

I'm not a pot smoker, but I do believe in ending the War on Drugs. Anyway, I was fascinated that a  populist holiday could emerge this way, so for those of my friends who want to light up, wishing you a great high.

Marijuana poses more risks than many realize

Marijuana poses more risks than many realize | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Doctors say they're increasingly fielding questions about the safety of marijuana, as use of the drug rises and more communities consider legalizing it. Here's what we know and don't know about health effects.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Now the educational work about marijuana begins. It's really fairly simple: don't use too much, be aware and don't let yourself become dependent on it, don't give it to kids. Being legal doesn't mean the same as it's safe anymore than alcohol or tobacco or even caffeine are necessarily safe.

Americans Are Smoking More Pot

Americans Are Smoking More Pot | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The World Drug Report found that as laws in the U.S. have relaxed toward marijuana, prices for the herb have dropped, far more people have begun to partake, and more people have landed in the hospital due to "cannabis-related treatment admissions"
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Yes, legalizing pot will lead to wider use and more people using it unwisely, but over the long run much of that will even out as the once forbidden fruit becomes just another option on the menu of life. Also, consider the decrease in criminal events, police involvements, etc. to say nothing of tax revenues and we have a no-brainer.

One striking chart shows why pharma companies are fighting legal marijuana

One striking chart shows why pharma companies are fighting legal marijuana | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
New research shows a dramatic drop in painkiller prescriptions after medical marijuana laws are passed.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is a strong finding to support the legalization of medical marijuana and suggests that we take a hard look at the role of big pharma in our nation's political discourse. Could it be that the drug companies are more interested in profits than in our health.
