These Trees: An anthology of photography and poetry

These Trees: An anthology of photography and poetry | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Award winning photographer and author, Ruthie Rosauer continues on her journey through the gardens and forests of North America and Hawaii.

Join her on her marvelous trek and discover her latest work, "These Trees". Ruthie shares over 130 original images and the poems she selected to go with them.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
I received my two contributor copies of Ms. Rosauer's new book, These Trees, and wanted to share her website. I don't contribute to many anthologies, but how could this Broody New Englander resist a request for poems about trees?

Russia's Desert - Roads & Kingdoms

Russia's Desert - Roads & Kingdoms | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
More than 20,000 villages lie abandoned in Russia. Meet the inhabitants who stayed behind.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
My poetry friends know that I am fascinated by words in languages other than English that have meanings beyond that tongue's ability to fully translate. One of my favorites is the Russian word "toska", which refers to the sadness and melancholy of the soul that drives one into isolation. While I could never be a hermit (in Russian an "otshelnik"), those who can have always fascinated me. As an author, I want to write about them, but when I start, they immediately become connected with others. Now were I Cormac McCarthy, who is himself a loner, perhaps I could tolerate actually writing such a book. For now, I will instead enjoy this article about people in Russia who remain in a strangely depopulated area. Why strangely? Because it's—by Russian standards—a perfectly nice area with livable weather and fertile ground. The thing is, people who live there add little to the overall wealth of their country as compared to those who live and mine in Siberia or those who farm in more productive areas. That's a big difference between the US and Russia, we continue to support areas that are marginally productive, like the Ozarks. While some people may leave for better jobs and futures, we keep right on providing roads, healthcare, education, and the like to those who remain behind. Not so in Russia.

At any rate,

L'Chaim

let us celebrate toska
and those who weep vodka.
Toast not life but death,
lonely and forgotten..
weeping soul of Mother Russia.

NASA admits theory of infinite space may be the result of leaving lens cap on | NewsBiscuit

NASA admits theory of infinite space may be the result of leaving lens cap on | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
‘It appears we may have got it all wrong’ a NASA spokesman admitted today during a hastily arranged press conference at The Kennedy Space Centre, Houston. ‘It has come to our attention that set procedures were not followed during the taking of the original pictures of space but hey, we've all made that mistake. That sunset summer holiday snap in Crete, the graduation hand shake, a child's first steps, those never to be repeated moments captured instead with a deep, infinite blackness, it's easily done’. This will cause further embarrassment for NASA as it comes just weeks after the disclosure that the recently captured supernova in Ursa Minor was actually the photographer’s thumb creeping into the frame. NASA has been working hard to develop its technology to cope with the demands of the space age. ‘It can be tricky taking photos in space’ said astronaut Eugene A. Cernan. ‘Those big gloves make pressing the button really difficult. You try setting the timer and running back into position wearing those cumbersome space suits; it's harder than you might think.’
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love a good laugh. How about you?

Amazing old pictures in color (world war i color photos, photo colorize) - ODDEE | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Color film was non-existent in 1909 Russia, yet in that year a photographer named Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii embarked on a photographic survey of his homeland and captured hundreds of photos in full, vivid color. His photographic plates were black and white, but he had developed an ingenious photographic technique which allowed him to use them to produce accurate color images.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Some great old pictures from France, Germany, and Russia done in color when that was a rarity. Enjoy!
