How Your Favorite Fast Food Meals Are Changing

How Your Favorite Fast Food Meals Are Changing | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chains from Taco Bell to Pizza Hut are throwing out the additives and embracing the natural ingredients
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Since I don't eat fast food, this is not terribly important to me personally; but I think it represents a change in the way we think about our food. My question is will this be a fast enough and big enough change to save our food supply from companies like Monsanto that claim they are providing us with the best GMOs and chemicals. It bothers me that many who oppose big-brother government are willing to trust big-brother corporatism.

Child malaria vaccine: Final trials bring hope - BBC News

Child malaria vaccine: Final trials bring hope - BBC News | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Final clinical trials of a malaria vaccine - the first to reach this stage - suggest it could protect one third of children against malaria, according to data published in The Lancet.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While many Americans have forgotten why vaccines are important, the people of Africa can only pray that this partially effective vaccine will lead the way to one that will give the same kind of protection that those against polio, measles, mumps, and the like are already providing for billions of people. Meanwhile, malaria continues to be the scourge of Africa and tropical countries around the world.

Rising Levels of Toxic Gas Found in Homes Near Fracking Sites | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Levels of radon, a cancer-causing, radioactive gas, have been rising measurably in Pennsylvania since the controversial practice of fracking started there, r...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Golly, gosh, if you attack the earth, the earth fights back. What a concept. Seriously, does anybody remember Buckminster Fuller? And let there be no mistake about it, fracking is as aggressive an approach to getting oil as you can find, much more disruptive of the geology than drilling. There is no question that we need to be more careful of our planet; it's the only one we have.

Pamela Hills's curator insight, April 15, 9:14 AM

Good Grief how many red flags can we raise against Fracking and the list is growing.

(1) The millions of water used and then contaminated and put back in to the earth. There are reports they are using this process to get rid of Nuclear waste.

(2) Proof is can cause earth Quakes

(3)  Now this with Radon

(4) California needs fracking there like hole in the head with worst drought ever and lakes going dry ! How many more states will face same thing ?

How many ways can the world scream "STOP FRACKING " ?

Foods You Should Eat Instead of Taking Vitamins

Foods You Should Eat Instead of Taking Vitamins | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
If you're eating a healthy diet, you shouldn't need all those bottles of vitamins
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I think many people are over-dosing themselves with vitamins and other supplements, I don't know that we can actually find enough oranges, salmon, and almonds to do the job. And I for one can't bring myself to eat kale or chia seeds, but milk products I do like. Anyway, in the real world of eating and especially with 7 billion hungry mouths in the nest we call the Earth, eating properly isn't that easy. So most of us will have to keep taking vitamins and hopefully the government will force business to produce and market them properly. Just try to keep your intake balanced and beware cheap knockoffs.

Who Should—and Who Shouldn't—Take Vitamin D

Who Should—and Who Shouldn't—Take Vitamin D | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Here's what experts say, based on the latest evidence
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What the experts always say is there isn't enough evidence to decide but don't take too much of anything. I have no idea if the 1,000 iu plus the D in an eye vitamin I take each day is a good thing or not, but at least it appears to be safe. One of the great dangers is combining supplements that can push one or more vitamins too high. Be careful not a sheep-consumer.

Exercise gets in the way of more important things like reading, eating, watching television, and napping. It should be avoided with all due moderation. Seriously, I guess it's a good thing to take a brisk walk or even a jog.

Ancient superfoods saved (and savored) by modern palates | Al Jazeera America | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Perhaps it An heirloom grain revival takes root in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands

Kenneth Weene's insight:

The supermarket mentality, the failure to curb population, and the belief that science always does the right thing have been major forces in driving us away from healthier eating. This is a refreshing change. Many of my Native American friends are involved in trying to make traditional seeds more available. Sadly, theirs are often among the worst diets as the U.S. government sends them surplus junk instead of encouraging healthy local farming.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of neuroscience I love to read. Of course, what the researchers miss by studying mice is the wonderful reinforcement human dieters can set up for themselves when they do without those extra calories. As they say, "Nothings tastes as good as thin feels."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

As an allergy sufferer, I am glad to be out of New England this spring. As a lover of nature, trees, and the beauty of Maine, I am so sorry to be missing this great season. The problem is that were I in the North East this year, I would probably have to spend most of my time in a glass bubble or at least an air-conditioned room. So, for my millions of fellow allergy sufferers who live in that lovely part of the world, "Gesundheit."

Eating Eggs With Raw Veggies Boosts Nutritional Benefits

Eating Eggs With Raw Veggies Boosts Nutritional Benefits | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Add eggs to salads to increase carotenoid absorption almost ninefold.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In simple terms adding a cooked egg to a salad helps you absorb the food value of those raw veggies. Somehow this makes sense if we think of out evolutionary ancestors, small omnivores raiding the nests of birds while gathering edible plants and berries. My guess is that if it were safer to eat raw eggs, we'd fine that mixing raw egg into the salad would be even a better plan. Now a little fish in addition...hmm, am I discovering the Caesar Salad or the Cobb. Either way, I love it..

The Best Way to Treat Peanut Allergies? Eating Peanuts

The Best Way to Treat Peanut Allergies? Eating Peanuts | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
In a breakthrough study, researchers show that it’s not only possible to tamp down allergic reactions to peanuts, but by eating small amounts of them infants can avoid getting allergic in the first place
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Peanuts are such a basic of baseball, circuses, and saloons to say nothing of great foods like M&M Peanuts and peanut butter. They are a great treat and ubiquitous. But, some people are terribly allergic. Of course those of us who received allergy shots as kids know that there can be some homeopathic treatment for allergies and welcome it. More and more medicine is learning that many illnesses are effectively disruptions due to immune reactions (such as allergies) and auto-immune reactions. Teaching the body how to regulate itself is a promising new direction for medicine.

A study led by Howard Steiger, Ph.D., head of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute Eating Disorders Program, in Montreal, in collaboration with Linda Booij, a researcher with Sainte-Justine Hospital and an assistant professor at Queen's University, is the first to observe effects suggesting that the longer one suffers from active anorexia nervosa, the more likely they are to show disorder-relevant alterations in DNA methylation.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In effect, prolonged dieting leads to even more prolonged dieting which in turn leads to other profound health problems. The simple message, don't push children to diet and don't push false body images on children.

Can hugs make you healthier?

Can hugs make you healthier? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
New research sheds light on the major health benefits of social support
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Social support, and perhaps especially when expressed as hugs, helps relieve stress and that's important in fighting illness. My questions are about some of the mediating variables such as sex of both participants in the hug and the political orientation of the participants. Do Ayn Rand believers get less benefit from a hug than a Steinbeck reader? Underlying this topic is the question: Are humans primarily a social species or more about individual survival?
