10 Animals With Degrees and Diplomas - ODDEE

10 Animals With Degrees and Diplomas - ODDEE | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Sure, cats and dogs can't actually read, write or do arithmetic, but that hasn't stopped some of them from getting a degree. (schools, college, degrees, diplomas, pets, animals, diploma mills, fraud)
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Did you know that Punky the Cat is a co-host of It Matters Radio? She even writes our monthly newsletter. Of course, she never did finish her degree, but we've been told by a reliable pigeon that she attended an ivy covered university. You can friend her on Facebook and catch her meows on the weekday shows (4 PM ET) and the Sunday show (3 PM).

Koala mauling is an uneasy reminder of mountain lions' place in Southern California

Koala mauling is an uneasy reminder of mountain lions' place in Southern California | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Natalie Riggs was sickened by the sight of the carcasses of cherished pets ravaged by a mountain lion. Blood streaked the ground in the pen where her two sheep, Blanca and Blackie, had their throats slashed. Blanca's hindquarters had been eaten. Blackie was killed for no apparent reason. "I
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If you have domesticated animals, it is your responsibility to protect them from the wild predators that live around you. As a strong supporter of that position, I share this story of Mountain Lions and other animals, yes, sadly including a Koala.

7 new breeds have just become eligible to compete at the Westminster dog show. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The dogs are unique and adorable, but is all of this OK?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love dogs and these breeds look delightful, but is it really good for animals to be bred into stereotypes? My corgi was a champion, my Airedale was just a delight, and my poodle terrier mix was a queen; the papers for two didn't make them better then the one. Nor did those papers make them healthier. Anyway, if you're a dog lover, you'll find this fascinating reading and great pictures.

It is rare for a new animal species to emerge in front of scientists’ eyes. But this seems to be happening in eastern North America
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The coywolf, a new species or just a hybrid? Either way a major new player in the ecology of eastern North America.

Man killed during bull run in Spain pushes death toll to 10 so far for year

Man killed during bull run in Spain pushes death toll to 10 so far for year | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
As the number of towns holding bull runs grows to nearly 16,000, the death of a man in his 40s pushes the toll to equal the record of deaths set in 2009
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Tourists are an incredibly inane species, somewhat like the lemming or the dodo in individual intellectual prowess. Without that stupidity, the running of the bulls would never be such a major event. Let's face it, those who are watching want to see blood and those who are taking part—well, they want to feel that they are better than others. Yeah, I admit it, I'm not a fan of bull fighting either; but I do love a good steak, and that's no bull. Matter of fact, it's more likely a steer.

Got a healthy stream? You've probably got a hellbender.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a child I never caught polliwogs or fireflies or fished for sunnies. It wasn't that I didn't want to, it was that I cared about life too much to waste it, too much about nature to harm it. One of the great traumas of my young life was the death of my tropical fish—a story I will someday share. Anyway, here are some little critters that I never knew about before and find fascinating, a species of salamander native to Appalachian streams.

What I Learned From Tickling Apes

What I Learned From Tickling Apes | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Humans aren’t so special. Animals think much more deeply than we imagine.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Are other species closer to human than science has wanted to admit? I found this paragraph particularly important. "One reason this whole debate is as heated as it is relates to its moral implications. When our ancestors moved from hunting to farming, they lost respect for animals and began to look at themselves as the rulers of nature. In order to justify how they treated other species, they had to play down their intelligence and deny them a soul. It is impossible to reverse this trend without raising questions about human attitudes and practices. We can see this process underway in the halting of biomedical research on chimpanzees and the opposition to the use of killer whales for entertainment."

10 Weird Service Animals - ODDEE

From rats to kangaroos, unusual support animals are popping up everywhere.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Okay, I believe that your rat, iguana, pig, etc. help you get through the day, but I do question some of the ill-behaved dogs wearing vests that seem to be filling our streets. Seems to me that there should be some criteria for actually being considered a service animal. Now about my protection rattler, why can't I bring her into the bar with me? She wouldn't hurt anyone who wasn't going to hurt me."

No-one knows where the circus animals that died in an 1893 Pennsylvania train derailment are buried—or where the ones that survived escaped to.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a kid, I loved circuses; but as an adult I always felt for the animals. I hope that some of the escapees found happiness in the Pennsylvania woods. Of course, now clowns have become an endangered class of performers—having been replaced by Kardashians and politicians. He was supposed to kill these 2 bear cubs. He saved them instead. Now he might lose his job. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Thousands of people are trying to get him his job back.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is one of those feel good but wait a minute stories. Sure the cubs are cute and who would want to harm them, but do we really need to save black bear cubs? The species is hardly endangered, especially in the Vancouver Island region. Which brings us to a reality—nature is cruel. We humans are strangely ambivalent about the creatures that surround us. We fight for them and then decry the reality when they become a problem for us, for example when deer raid our gardens or coyotes eat our dogs and cats. Anyway, I think it wrong to tell a firefighter that he has to kill animals. If you want to euthanize an animal, the least you can do is get somebody to do the job who is willing, not somebody who is dedicated to saving life.

World’s Most Patient Pet Owner Walks His Giant Tortoise Through Streets Of Tokyo

World’s Most Patient Pet Owner Walks His Giant Tortoise Through Streets Of Tokyo | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Residents in Tokyo have recently reported several sightings of possibly the most patient pet-walker in the world: an elderly man who takes his enormous African spurred tortoise (or sulcata) out for walks around the town. Judging by the tortoise's size, the mysterious pair has probably been together for a very long time, and the tortoise always plods faithfully by its owner's side. It even tolerates the occasional silly costume!
