Sex has been around forever, but we're just starting to understand it. Today we're debunking 10 of the most common sex myths to set the record straight.

New depression treatments reported

New insights into the physiological causes of depression are leading to treatments beyond common antidepressants such as Prozac and Zoloft, researchers are reporting in the journal Current Psychiatry.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is good to know that a range of treatments is being developed. It is too easy to think that all depressions are the same any more than all headaches are the same or that all fevers are caused by the same pathogen.

Identification of gene that influences joint attention in chimpanzees provides insight into autism spectrum disorders | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
(Medical Xpress)—Following another's gaze or looking in the direction someone is pointing, two examples of receptive joint attention, is significantly heritable according to new study results from researchers at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University. Determining such communicative ...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A great example of the intersection of biology and comparative psychology. That there is a genetic link between sharing and tacking the gaze of others and the autism spectrum disorders make perfect sense. The implication that the resulting deficit (if it is a deficit) can me ameliorated by social cues also makes sense. Love this kind of science.

GOP Quietly Alters Its Obamacare Alternative To Scrap Huge Tax Hike

GOP Quietly Alters Its Obamacare Alternative To Scrap Huge Tax Hike | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
It appears that the Senate Republicans who put forward their own alternative to Obamacare have quietly refined their proposal, undoing what would have been a significant tax increase on most Americans.

The apparent change centers on the plan's tax treatment of health insurance. Right now, health insurance contributions by employees and their employers are not taxed; the GOP wanted to include a cap on how much of those contributions can remain untaxed.

But the devil is in the details. The original eight-page proposal released by the Senate Republicans -- Richard Burr of North Carolina, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Orrin Hatch of Utah -- said that the new cap would be "65 percent of an average plan's costs." Health policy experts told TPM that this would likely result in a big tax increase on most Americans and some would probably lose their insurance.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Apparently the GOP has a basic problem which is only now hitting home. Government can only accomplish what needs doing if it has revenue, and the Republicans have signed on to the "taxes are evil" nonsense. Heck, if they want a better health care law and are willing to increase taxes on the wealthy, we can have universal coverage with a single payer.

Even Knowing About This Law Might Prevent You From Serving On A Jury - Digg

Even Knowing About This Law Might Prevent You From Serving On A Jury - Digg | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Guilty or not guilty? Well, there's a third option you might not know about.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

How often have you thought about whether you could convict somebody who did X or Y, even if those actions are clearly against the law? For example, would you convict the person who smoked a joint? The person who stole back a family heirloom that the courts had allowed somebody to take from the family? The person who killed the people who killed his wife or child? How about the person who helped a slave escape or the one who gave water to an undocumented person trying to make their way through the desert? So here you go, watch the video.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

While the topic is dead serious and Mr. Boehner's dishonesty upsetting, the entire GOP position has become farce. More to the point it is a total lie. I would love to hear the rationalizations that some of my right-wing friends might offer; but the simple reality is that to save his own position of the moment Mr. Boehner is doing the completely wrong thing for America and for any future the Republican party may in the long term have.

Whose behavior is worse, Justin Bieber or NFL player Richard Sherman? Sadly, race is the deciding factor for whom to label a ‘thug.’
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The worst part is that Americans think celebrity is really important rather than concerning themselves with making society better. That we overreact to Sherman's comments or bother to talk about Bieber's adolescence are just examples of how puerile we are.
