Fed Up With the Slutty Girl Scouts? Meet the Conservative Alternative.

Fed Up With the Slutty Girl Scouts? Meet the Conservative Alternative. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Want your daughter to learn all about camping, sewing and car repair, but with a heaping helping of Jesus? You could try to find a local Girl Scout troop with an especially Bible-thumping troop leader. Or you could just skip straight to the American Heritage Girls, conservative Christianity's very own copycat.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Seems to me that this group's agenda is far more rigid and intolerant than the Girl Scouts have ever been. In the process, the whole thing gives me some laughs. Of course if my kid wanted to join the AHG, I would most likely vomit, not because they encourage faith in God, but because they hid behind faith as an alternative to thinking.

ST. HELENA, Calif.: California farmers hire dowsers to find water | National | Merced Sun-Star | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
With California in the grips of drought, farmers throughout the state are using a mysterious and some say foolhardy tool for locating underground water: dowsers, or water witches.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When I was a kid, my father decided to drill a new well on our place in Maine. I watched him dowse with a willow branch. He found a sewer line, which convinced him that the technique would work, and proceeded to find the spot where he sank the well, into which he sank a lot of money for the slightest gurgle of water. Good luck to these desperate farmers.

Arizona Town Overrun By Packs of Wild Roving Chihuahuas | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Tiny yappy dogs have taken over the streets of a small town in Arizona, chasing young children while their parents apparently cower inside, frantically redialing 311 -- Maryvale Animal Control received more than 6,000 calls in the last year alone.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This would be funny were it not real. While this is probably a result of pets being abandoned during the recession and then breeding, it is a reminder that pet ownership is a responsibility and not spaying and neutering can lead to serious problems.

Does a diet high in carbohydrates increase your risk of dementia?

Does a diet high in carbohydrates increase your risk of dementia? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Even small increases in blood sugar caused by a diet high in carbohydrates can be detrimental to brain health. Recent reports in medical literature link carbohydrate calorie-rich diets to a greater risk for brain shrinkage, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, impaired cognition, and other disorders. David Perlmutter, M.D., best-selling author of 'Grain Brain,' explores this important topic in a provocative interview in Alternative and Complementary Therapies from Mary Ann Liebert Inc. publishers.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have noticed that my stomach has been shrinking since I gave up cake, pie, and other desserts. As for my brain, well first you have to have one before it can shrink.

Monday night viewing: close encounter with enormous asteroid

Monday night viewing: close encounter with enormous asteroid | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
(Reuters) - An asteroid estimated to be the size of three football fields is set for its close-up on a live webcast as it whizzes by Earth on Monday, roughly a year after one exploded over Russia and injured 1,200 people. Slooh Space Camera plans to track the close approach of Asteroid 2000 EM26 as it races past the planet at approximately 27,000 miles per hour (43,000 km/h), starting at 9 p.m. EST (2 a.m. GMT, February 18), the robotic telescope service said in a statement on Slooh.com. The 295-yard (270-meter) asteroid was expected to streak by Earth little more than a year after another asteroid exploded on February 15, 2013 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, injuring 1,200 people following a massive shock wave that shattered windows and damaged buildings. However, the International Olympic Committee at the last minute said it could be done only after the games and separately.
