Florida couple accused of turning 13-year-old girl into sex slave; charged with sexual assault

Florida couple accused of turning 13-year-old girl into sex slave; charged with sexual assault | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A Florida couple turned a teen into their sex slave and sealed her off from the outside world for more than five years, police said after arresting the two.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

How ironic that this story should break on the same day as the one about sex slavery within ISIS. Let us not forget that religion is tribal and can always be used to justify evil; just one reason that we should always distrust preachers and prophets.

Here’s When to See the Perseid Meteor Shower

Here’s When to See the Perseid Meteor Shower | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
One of the best meteor showers of the year is coming in just a few days
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Remember no cell phones, telescopes, or binoculars. Just take your eyes outside for a treat. Aug 12 and 13. Far from the city lights as you can get and look up. Make a wish on a falling star it is is as likely to come true as when you drop a coin down a well. So wish on each one you see. Remember, one wish has to be for somebody to buy a copy of "Broody New Englander." Heck do you think I share this information on the social media for nothing? I have millions of little electrons to feed, so while you're at it, you can buy a copy of "Broody", too.

Migrants face ‘milk and honey ban’ at UK Supermarkets | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
David Cameron has unveiled emergency legislation to forbid the sale of milk and honey products to those who do not have the legal right to be in Britain. News of the ban has resulted in what French police are calling ‘an almost instant’ solution to the crisis at Calais, with migrants packing up and heading back to their war torn dictatorships, where death or long term poverty awaits, rather than face a lifetime in the UK with only lemon tea and black coffee to drink.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And the right wing in the Unites States is insisting that all streets of gold be repaved with lettuce in need of picking.

Will we be able to convert robots to Christianity?

Will we be able to convert robots to Christianity? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
We spoke to seven scholars and futurists about the singularity and the uncertain future of religion.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If machines do decide to recognize a god, my guess is it will be Alan Turing. The beginning is always about one's own kind not about aliens. That is why, for example, the Bible doesn't bother with life on other planets or even he other life that it then mentions indirectly on Earth, i.e. the people that marry the descendents of Adam and Eve. All creation stories are written by narcissists. Please share your thoughts.

Teen pregnancy is down 40% in Colorado, and the reason is unbelievably simple: birth control. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A small change can make a very big impact.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

And how many of those young people are getting their birth control from Planned Parenthood? Lots. And how many of them are learning about contraception in sex education? Lots. So if you really oppose abortion, support sex ed and free contraception. Yes, it is really that simple. Help people to make good decisions in their lives instead of condemning them when they are forced to make decisions in desperation.

Man, young girl killed when circus tent collapses in Lancaster, N.H.

Man, young girl killed when circus tent collapses in Lancaster, N.H. | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A man and young girl were killed and at least 22 people were injured Monday when a severe storm blew down a circus tent in northern New Hampshire, officials said.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have always been keenly aware of the strange good versus evil quality of circuses. Have you read Two Tales of Terror? "Bela the Clown" is one of my favorite stories. (TTofT is available on Kindle) And, of course, there is the circus scene in "Memoirs From the Asylum." Based on a true event, that scene is madness at its height. So, no, I no longer go to the circus looking for ohhs and ahhs and smiles. I do miss the clowns for stupid laughs, but there's always politics.

Sundowners with Baboons by Trish Jackson | The Write Room Blog

Sundowners with Baboons by Trish Jackson | The Write Room Blog | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Where do fiction authors get their ideas?  This is a question I am often asked. Usually I respond by saying the ideas come from our subconscious minds. Very often, for me, the story line for a complete novel is there and once I sit down and start writing it all just flows onto the computer screen without me consciously having to decide what to write.

Other writers have the same experience.

So where do our subconscious minds get their material? It can only be from our life’s experiences.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

An interesting personal experience from a fine writer, who is one of the disparate group of The Write Room Blog.

Chinese Textile Mills Are Now Hiring in Places Where Cotton Was King

Chinese Textile Mills Are Now Hiring in Places Where Cotton Was King | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Chinese textile manufacturers drawn by cheap cotton, falling labor costs and government incentives are helping revive depressed mill towns in the American South.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So American productivity is good but can Chinese industry learn to live with American workers who might expect more freedom, more control, and most importantly more material reward once the plant is running full-tilt? Or does management expect American workers to take on the driven desperation of the traditional Chinese? It will be interesting to see if once the investment is made and the contracts for product written if labor will want — as it should — a bigger piece of the pie.

New genetic tests confirm that President Warren G. Harding had a daughter with Nan Britton, who scandalized the nation in the 1920s by claiming she bore the love child of the 29th president.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A fun tidbit in American history. It is good,  however, to notice that a Republican was as sexually immoral as Bill Clinton. "Put a man in power and give him a chance to be idolized and it will be hard for him to turn down the benefits."

Inside Facebook’s Quest for Software That Understands You | MIT Technology Review

Inside Facebook’s Quest for Software That Understands You | MIT Technology Review | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A reincarnation of one of the oldest ideas in artificial intelligence could finally make it possible to truly converse with our computers. And Facebook has a chance to make it happen first.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you are into Artificial Intelligence (AI), this is a fascinating article. For my part, I believe that true AI will only be developed when the crucial balance of inhibitory circuits and excitatory circuits is found. Also, these circuits will have to integrate multiple banks of purposed nodes so that different types of knowing can be simulated, i.e. emotional, active, perceptive, verbal. and vectored (the interconnection of occurrences which is referenced in this article). Still, they are getting closer and that's exciting and terrifying at the same time.

Mormons: Come Look at Our Secret Stone

Mormons: Come Look at Our Secret Stone | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
As part of its reluctant campaign to be more ‘transparent’ about Mormon teaching, the LDS church highlights one of its weirder elements.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Whether you consider it a "seer stone" or a "sucker stone", the history of the Mormon church is a wonderfully fantastical journey. So here's to Joseph Smith and his 33 wives, his white hat, and his weird religious revelation. Now can I get my planet? Hell, it's no stranger than burning bushes, empty tombs, or prophets being taken up to heaven. Certainly not as crazy as heaven and hell like this is all a test.

Those delightfully zany Dutch have done it again!
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Tesla would have loved this. While there would be some cost to build and maintain this system (not free electricity), it would certainly be a lot cheaper then the current methods and of course there's no pollution, which is a big plus. Now how will coal and oil companies react? How will governments respond? Those are always the big questions, but hopefully this is a great leap forward  from the lovely city of Delft, the Netherlands.

Teachers learn a lesson in loopholes when it comes to pumping breast milk

Teachers learn a lesson in loopholes when it comes to pumping breast milk | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Some educators face a choice: Quit their jobs to keep breast-feeding their babies, or quit breast-feeding to keep working.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a society, we have to find the common-sense solution to this problem, especially for teachers. Of all the women who care about their children, who more so than these women who care so much for other peoples' children? Obviously, they should not have to quit in order to provide their own babies with breast milk. Hopefully, every state will take up this issue and provide a good solution, including the provision of temporary privacy areas inside the classrooms. How much would it cost to install a small privacy area in the classrooms, one which the teacher could use for the necessary few times a day?

Daily Mail exclusive: Cecil the lion was depraved serial killer | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
For days, the left has been wringing its hands on social media over the fate of 'Cecil', the iconic African lion who was shot dead by a brave, freedom-loving American hunter armed only with a high-powered crossbow. Now, however, the ugly truth about this distasteful animal is slowly beginning to emerge.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The way I heard it, Cecil was lured with the offer of free dental work. You have no idea how difficult it is to get a good feline dentist in Zimbabwe. even if you are the boss of a cattel.
