Dyslexie: the chubby-ankled font that makes reading easier for dyslexics | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
By weighing down the characters and distorting similar letters, this new typeface pins words firmly to the page
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If this actually makes it easier for dyslexics to read, it will be a wonderful contribution not only to education but to mental health. So often reading has been a devastating roadblock in the development of self-esteem.

Veterans enjoy slew of freebies on Veterans Day

Veterans enjoy slew of freebies on Veterans Day | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Veterans Day is not only a time to honor those who have served in the military: For American businesses, it's also a time to back that appreciation up with a freebie.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I think it's great that business give back to our veterans here in the U.S. and in every country. It does seem to me, however, that there should be a better way of doing it. I like that Great Clips is giving out a deal that can be used over the next 6 weeks and think that a better method. And how about all the vets who can't get to that free lunch? Some are too old, too sick, or just working—I'd like to see business doing something for them as well. I have a great idea. How about all those businesses send some money to the V.A. and have that bureaucracy distribute it to all our vets? Heck, they may get 2 cents of each dollar by the next millennium.

Seriously, I do support the honoring of those who have fought for their country and I hope you do as well.

Two Colorado police officers went beyond the call of duty to help an 86-year-old great-grandmother after her purse was stolen. Julia Brecht was shopping at the Aurora Super Target when her purse was snatched from her cart, reports The Daily Mail.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We see so many instances of police misbehavior and sometimes forget that are thousands of decent men and women serving our communities in blue uniforms. These two officers remind us what serve and protect should mean.

Santa Muerte’s promise of prosperity

Santa Muerte’s promise of prosperity | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The Mexican folk saint has hit the mainstream as an icon commodified.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is a fascinating movement within the Catholic Church, one that is growing beyond the Mexican community where it started. The Church may not condone it, may not recognize the Angel of Death, she has both an aesthetic and a cultural appeal. What surprises me is that there is no mention of blood in the gifts offered to her. Did not the Israelites mark their doors with the blood of a lamb that the Angel of Death might pass them by?

Man finally electrocuted after years of poking fork into toaster | NewsBiscuit

Man finally electrocuted after years of poking fork into toaster | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A man from Derbyshire has finally succeeded in receiving a fatal electric shock, 7 years after first starting to extract teacakes from his toaster with a fork. In a pre-written statement found in a special section on his Facebook page, Bradley Smith, spoke of his joy in realising a passive suicide idea that he’d come up with whilst watching an episode of EastEnders in 2007. “It was an epiphany,” blogged the 37 year old screenwriter. “My work was getting me down big-time. I tried Googling spectacular ways of checking out, but my rural broadband connection was serving up suggestions slower than those monochrome computers at the start of the Aliens movies. I figured that there was a good chance I’d probably die of natural causes before I found something interesting,” he explained.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Some things are just good for a laugh.

Germany's Revolution in Small Batch, Artisanal Energy

Germany's Revolution in Small Batch, Artisanal Energy | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The industrial engine of Europe is increasingly powered by backyard windmills and locally owned solar panels. And this complex, patchwork system just might be the future of sustainable energy.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The old model of economies of size which suggests that big industry is the better way to go for an economy may not be the right model after all. Germany seems to be getting a very efficient energy industry and one that protects the environment by allowing small, locally driven projects. Perhaps the U.S. should follow suit.

Everyone now officially an artisan | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Following the revelation that printers, blacksmiths, cigar pen makers and even quilt rack makers have joined bakers, butchers and cheese makers in using the term ‘artisan’, experts have ruled that absolutely anyone is free to claim to be one. The only conditions are that they have to be unemployed marketing graduates and are not funneling over a thousand tonnes a day of cement powder and cows’ vaginas into a mixer and hoping for the best.

Highway seizure in Iowa fuels debate about asset-forfeiture laws

Highway seizure in Iowa fuels debate about asset-forfeiture laws | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Two men contend Iowa officers violated their constitutional rights by taking their money during a traffic stop.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

At least in this instance justice sort of prevailed except for the $10 grand or so that still hasn't been returned, the lost time and sense of security, and the damage to us all in the attack on our constitutional rights. The War on Drugs is part of a systematic attack on those rights. It is no longer enough to say "Well, I know I didn't do anything wrong." We must stand against such tyrannical law enforcement and the "secret" organizations behind it.

By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There is no doubt scientists had a lot of luck on their side in discovering a critter from the age of dinosaurs that rewrites our understanding of the history of early mammals. The researchers said on Wednesday they unearthed in Madagascar the fossil of a remarkable creature resembling a big groundhog that lived about 66 million years ago and, at about 20 pounds (9 kg), was enormous compared to most other mammals of the Mesozoic Era. ...
