The Ancient Greeks, Pacific Islanders, And Maya All Ignored This One Thing. Big Mistake!

The Ancient Greeks, Pacific Islanders, And Maya All Ignored This One Thing. Big Mistake! | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
As Vandana Shiva, an advocate for sustainable farming, says, a war on the soil is like suicide. Past cultures, like the Maya, ancient Greeks, and Easter Islanders, cleared land for farming, but left the soil exposed to wind and water, which carried away the rich topsoil. Topsoil is the fertile layer where all the action is. Without it, crops struggle to grow, produce less, and are vulnerable to diseases. That means less food for people.Things that matter. Pass 'em on.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When the first humans landed in New Zealand there were great birds, the flightless moas. The humans wanting food killed the birds faster than they could reproduce. In the end, the birds had gone extinct and the humans were again hungry. Now we dumb phosphates and the like into the soil. It may take longer for the Earth to stop keeping up with that depredation, but in the end we will again be going hungry having despoiled yet another treasure. Sic semper homanes.

Recent research examines the role Oxytocin plays in fidelity and how meditation can increase its production.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Forget poetry. Forget love letters (well, now a text—preferably no more than 140 characters). Forget romantic dinners. Just pass the chemicals and love will follow. There is a powerful short story to be written based on this information; but I don't want to be the one to write it.

Move over, cows and chickens
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Down at Hoppy's Happy Bar-B-Que we got a hankerin' for ribs. They tell me human tastes just like pork. Seriously, maybe the best solution is to cut back on the number of humans instead of breeding like, I don't know, rabbits.

Orangutan Declared To Have Basic Legal Rights In Argentina | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A Buenos Aires judge ruled in favor of advocates, who are calling for more freedom for Sandra, a 28-year-old orangutan who was born in a zoo.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What a fascinating topic. I wonder if Purdue chickens will file a class action asking an end to tough treatment. If I had a goldfish, perhaps I would be less koi on this topic.

Aleena Reyes's curator insight, May 6, 2015 11:19 PM

I dared look at the comments and a lot of people were kidding around about this. I am glad no one was overly harsh and critical but this is huge news! Non-human primates have all the same feelings and emotions that we do. We are not so different and I am glad that Argentina is paving the way to help primates. Orangutans especially are incredibly endangered and even their social structure has dramatically changed due to human interference. Hopefully more countries catch wind of this and follow in there footsteps.

Party of teachers finally settles restaurant bill from 2013 Christmas lunch | NewsBiscuit | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
After a year of painful negotiations, a group of teachers has today finally agreed how to allocate the bill from their 2013 Christmas lunch, just in time to book into the same restaurant for their 2014 event.  ‘I know it sounds like a small sum to those in the private sector,’ said one member of the group, ‘but there was an important principle at stake: I didn't have a starter and Eric had two glasses of wine.  And I won’t even mention a certain person who isn't even a teacher, she’s just a supply, yet she had a Black Forest gateau that wasn't even on the set menu.  She clearly doesn't do things by half. Except with her job.'
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Having been a teacher and having gone to lunch with my peers, I can truly appreciate this bit of humor.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

"A handmade wreath already promised Christmas on the Bryant's door. White pine needles and cones, sprigs of choke cherries in cheery all bound in Concord grape vine. Nothing elaborate, a guarantee of a home, heart, and love within." From Broody New Englander with a wish of wonderful holidays for all.

Say legalization is unconstitutional.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love it when the hypocrisy of the far right becomes so obvious. Aren't these the same people who were outraged when the federal government pushed for change in healthcare and insurance law, the ones who screamed states' rights? Meanwhile, is the federal ban on marijuana ready to fall? We can only hope.

New light shed on emotional fear

New light shed on emotional fear | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Bad experiences and unpleasant events can remain etched into the brain for a person’s entire life. A new study has identified the brain processes at work that enable ‘bad thoughts’ to remain.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While the writing in this piece is poorly done, the essential information is fascinating. Small though it is, the amygdala plays such a powerful role in emotional development. From my own history of PTSD I can certainly understand why this is important research. Now can it lead to treatment?

The 10 Most Disappointing Chain Restaurants

The 10 Most Disappointing Chain Restaurants | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Maybe "Olive Garden" stands for "overly Americanized and overcooked pasta" in Italian. Whatever the case, Olive Garden continues to disappoint fans of Italian food. Without the endless salad and bread sticks, it would not even be worth stopping by.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't do chains if I can help it, but these are certainly among the worst. I will say this, if I have to choose between one of these and Burger King or McDonald's as I travel along a highway, I will go for most of these. However, Subway would be better than eating this slop.

Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson gave the perfect response Friday to a pro-cop resident who criticized his department for going soft on anti-police brutality protesters.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

By his response this police chief exemplifies what it means to "protect and serve." I am sure there are problems within the force he leads—there are always problems; but I bet there aren't many and I bet that the men and women who serve under him are proud to be part of his force. "Respect everyone," now that is a message to be heard.

About 200 Mashco-Piro Indians armed with bows and arrows arrived at Monte Salvador looking for food.

They are said to have killed domestic animals and taken cooking pots and other metal goods.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

What a strange problem: Should we preserve the primitive and create a reserve as if they were animals to be contained or should we try to connect with them at the cost of their culture? But if they are killing domestic animals and seeking metal objects, haven't we already begun changing them? Anybody remember "The Gods Must Be Crazy?"

Presidents have perhaps the most stressful job in the world. For Barack Obama, recharging his batteries requires a mix of golf, books, Nicorette — but most of all, time with his family.

I found this piece reassuring. I want somebody with a good personal balance running things. I may not always agree with Mr. Obama, but he seems like a man I'd like, We wouldn't golf or talk sports, since I don't do either; but perhaps we could talk books and family life. I just have to figure out how to send him a copy of one of my books. I think he'd enjoy Memoirs From the Asylum.
